What Should Texas do About Cap and Trade? Don't Ask Bill White!

The following came in from the Republican Party of Texas:

Here we go again. Texans deserve straight answers from the people who want to lead us. Democrat Bill White is running for governor of our state, so it's fair to ask him what he thinks of his party's Waxman-Markey bill, better known as cap and trade. The Texas Workforce Commission took a look at Waxman-Markey last year, and concluded that it would be a massive "job killer" for Texas, in that it would dramatically raise our energy costs and hurt the manufacturing sector while increasing dependence on foreign sources of energy. As the nation's top energy exporter, cap and trade poses a direct threat to the Texas economy.

So what does Bill White think about cap and trade? A concerned Texan asked his campaign that very question recently. Here's the intial answer that came back.

Dear (Name Redacted),
Thank you for contacting my campaign.
We will respond to your query shortly. If you don't hear from us in 7 days, please call 713-659-9000 713-659-9000.
Thank you,
Bill White

The concerned Texan waited patiently, then decided to email the Bill White campaign again. And finally, an answer! Sort of.

Dear (Name Redacted)
Thank you for your question. Bill believes that the 3 best solutions to reduce greenhouse gases are (1) energy efficiency, especially in buildings, to reduce power consumption; (2) auto fuel economy standards that reduce on-road emissions; and (3) increased reliance on cleaner fuels than coal such as natural gas and nuclear power. Bill White for Texas

"This is bad even for liberal Bill White," said Republican Party of Texas spokesman Bryan Preston. "Cap and trade has been in the national discussion for over a year. Did Liberal Bill pull a Rip Van Winkle and miss the whole discussion? Did he miss it when his party passed that bill in the House without ever bothering to read it?"

Preston added: "The fact is, these non-answers from Bill White tell us a lot. Yes and no just don't seem to be in his vocabulary. Ask him a simple question, get misdirection and obfuscation. But we know that Bill White recently suggested that even cap and trade doesn't go far enough. And we know that if liberal Bill really opposed cap and trade, he would just stand up and say so. But he didn't. Once again, he's standing with the radical elements in the Democratic party and not with the people of Texas."

Waxman-Markey, sponsored by radical leftwing Democrat Rep. Henry Waxman of California, would impose draconian new controls on how businesses and families use energy every day. It would raise the costs of everything, every time an American flips a switch, drives their car or uses energy in any way. The Center for Energy Economics at the University of Texas has estimated that cap and trade could cost Texas between 135,000 and 277,000 jobs in 2010 if passed. The National Association of Manufacturers estimates that Texas' job losses under cap and trade could be in the 150,000 to 200,000 range. To impose cap and trade at a time when we the economy is already under heavy duress is terrible policy that would damage Texas and, since Texas under Republican leadership has the nation's strongest economy, the nation as a whole.

Texas cannot afford Liberal Bill White and his liberal Democrat ideas.
