Politics and Motherhood: Making It All Work

Issues:

I know that most of you know me as a political blogger, and I am. Not only do I love to write, I also like to read other blogs, mostly about exercising, cooking and some other political blogs. One food blog in particular that I love is a blog called Iowa Girl Eats. I found it completely by accident a few years ago and I fell in love

Passage of Ukraine Support Act

Issues:

Today, I issued the following statement on H.R. 4278, the Ukraine Support Act, which passed the House with overwhelming bipartisan support. This legislation includes both sanctions against Russia and support measures for Ukraine. H.R. 4278 also includes the Poe Amendment, which requires the State Department to produce a report on the potential short, medium and long-term impacts of increased U.S. natural gas and oil exports on Russia’s economic and political influence over Ukraine and other European countries. Cornyn, Colleagues Call on the President to Cancel All Contracts with Russian Arms Firm

I joined with colleagues Thursday in sending a letter to President Obama, calling for sanctions on the Russian arms dealer Rosoboronexport. The letter outlines the egregious human rights violations that Rosoboronexport has engaged in, and calls for a ban on contracts with the company as a consequence of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

The letter is signed by Senators Cornyn (R-TX), Coats (R-IN), Blumenthal (D-CT), Murphy (D-CT), Boozman (R-AR), Risch (R-ID), Vitter (R-LA), Wicker (R-MS), Ayotte (R-NH) and Kirk (R-IL). The full text of the letter is below:

NASA’s Priority Should Be Space Exploration

As Chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, I held a hearing with NASA Administrator Charles Bolden, Jr. today to examine the Obama administration’s fiscal year 2015 (FY15) budget and its priorities. Members on both sides of the aisle raised numerous concerns with the priorities represented in the President’s proposal that cuts NASA’s funding by $185 million.

The President’s budget again seeks to fund an Asteroid Retrieval Mission (ARM), a mission that experts and Congress have sharply criticized. Congressman Smith highlighted testimony before the Committee

America Deserves a Better Space Program

According to a recent Washington Post-ABC News poll, two out of three Americans believe our country is on the wrong track and nearly six in 10 say that the economy has not even started to recover. Under President Obama, 20 million Americans are out of work, underemployed, or given up looking for a job.

Another recent poll found that a majority of Americans believe that the United States should “continue to be a world leader in manned space exploration.”

These two polls — one about Americans’ sense of our country being on the wrong track and the other about American leadership in space — have more in common than you might think.

Conservatives Should Join On A Constitutional Page

For some time now, almost all talk of the GOP has referred to a division between “establishment” and “tea party” camps. And there certainly has been contention with some considering tea party forces impractical and others considering establishment forces too conciliatory and ineffective in representing and advancing

Sell American Natural Gas to Ukraine

The Napoleon of Siberia, Putin, controls Ukraine and other European countries by holding their energy needs hostage. Russia uses gas as a political and economic weapon to manipulate its neighbors.

This does not have to be, and the United States can change that.

By selling European countries our oil and gas, we can reduce their dependence on imperialist Russia. We have more gas than we can use here in the United States, and we could sell the gas we dont need

Texas Rep. Farenthold to Bill Maher: I Don’t Work for Hollywood

HBO Comedian Bill Maher recently named Texas Rep. Blake Farenthold as a candidate for his “Flip a District” project along with other Members of Congress he may take interest in defeating in 2014, according to local reports.

Rep. Farenthold, the grandson of liberal icon Sissy Farenthold who was the first woman nominated to run for Vice President, was targeted by Maher

Cornyn: Democrats Have Given Up Legislating

I responded on the Senate floor to the agenda unveiled today by Senate Democrats amid concern they could lose their majority in November.

To put it in a word, theyve given up. Theyve given up legislating and are going to spend the next several months holding a series of show votes, which are in essence those designed to highlight poll-tested messages. I would think the American people would expect and certainly they would deserve better than that from the United States Senate. Read more about Cornyn: Democrats Have Given Up Legislating
