2013 Texas Legislative Session - Want to Stop the Magnet? Demand a Vote on House and Senate Worker Misclassification Bill

Red Tailed Hawk Perched on Lady Liberty atop Texas Capitol in AustinTexas Senator John Carona (R-Dallas) has been working hard for several years trying to get the State of Texas to enforce the existing laws on employee misclassification and add some teeth to the current laws by increasing the penalties for misclassifying workers as independent contractors when they are truly employees. Misclassification is also one of the biggest ways unethical employers skirt employment law and give jobs to illegal immigrants who work as day laborers.

Last week, I reported on a hearing held in the Texas Senate on Sen. Carona's bill, SB 676. While no one spoke in opposition to the bill, and commercial

President’s Science Advisor Admits He Has Not Discussed Critical Energy Pipeline with President

Issues:

Yesterday I questioned Dr. John Holdren, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, at a House Science, Space, and Technology Committee hearing on the President’s research priorities.

I questioned Dr. Holdren about the Keystone XL pipeline, a project that would potentially supply the United States with 830,000 barrels of oil a day

Expanded Background Checks Fail in the Senate - The Myth of the "Gun Show Loophole" lives on

Issues:

Poor Dianne Feinstein didn't get her wayThe U.S. Senate stood on the side of liberty today as it killed two measures aimed at restricting the rights of law-abiding private citizens.  In a vote of 54-46, the Senate rejected the expansion of background checks to include sales between private citizens, thus keeping the so called "Gun Show Loophole" alive for now.  Sen. Dianne Feinstein could not even rally a simple majority vote in her attempt to restrict law-abiding citizens from owning weapons she feels are objectionable.  Her bill failed by an embarrassing margin of 40-60.  Both of these represent huge defeats to the Obama Administration. Intruder Dials 911, Afraid Homeowner Might Have a Gun!

A Portland, Oregon, woman arrived home to find an intruder in the shower!

The Portland homeowner called out “Why are you in my house taking a shower?”

The uninvited shower guest replied, “I’m sorry…my name’s Timothy James Chapek.”

Timothy Chapek, 25, then dialed 911 and told the emergency operator, “I just broke in to a house and the owners came home…I think they might have guns.”

The homeowner also called 911 to report the intruder. Read more about Intruder Dials 911, Afraid Homeowner Might Have a Gun!

Homeland Security Ammunition Purchases

Issues:

I’ve been getting quite a lot of calls and emails lately asking about ammunition purchases by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Social Security Administration (SSA), and other federal agencies. I’ve been answering these individual questions, and I wanted to share that answer with all my readers, since it’s clear that this is an important subject in West Texas. Big Brother is watching. And Big Brother is the IRS

Issues:

If you talk about the IRS don’t do it via email or text—the agency you mailed a check to this week can eavesdrop without a search warrant or probable cause. Since 2009 the IRS has held the position that the Fourth Amendment does not protect electronic transmissions.

The Stored Communications Act provides insufficient Fourth Amendment protections and the Supreme Court needs to make a clear statement

Group of People Run Toward Boston Bombings to Assist the Wounded

Issues:

Yesterday was Patriot's Day in Boston. To commemorate Boston's fierce spirit of independence, Bostonians host a worldwide marathon.

Yesterday as runners approached the finish line of the marathon, terror erupted: two explosions, 14 seconds apart. Two other bombs were also found by law enforcement. The scene was described as a war zone. Read more about Group of People Run Toward Boston Bombings to Assist the Wounded

The Violence of the Atheist State: Moral Decay in the name of Godlessness

Issues:

Recently, a friend of mine was arguing with me that atheism should be embarrassed because "no one has ever been murdered in the name of atheism." It was explained that the greatest violence in world history was due to religion and that today's violence in the Middle East is rooted exclusively in religious dogma. To that end, government must act to pressure societal rejection of faith. Be that as it may, the idea of absence of religion answering religious violence is mind numbingly inconsistent with history.

The biggest mass murder and source of bigotry in our lifetimes is atheism. The nihilistic nature of atheism gives rise to state sponsored institutional murder
