GOP Candidate Charles Djou Favored to Take Over Obama's Home District in Hawaii Special Election

Hawaii is to hold a special election for U.S. Representative of its 1st Congressional District on May 22 to fill the vacancy of Democrat Neil Abercrombie, who resigned in February. The candidates vying for the position are Republican Charles Djou and Democrats Ed Case and Colleen Hanabusa. This district is highly Democratic, but since there is no primary election for this race, the Democrat vote may be split between the two Democrat candidates - leading to a Republican victory.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which has already spent $314,000 on a campaign against Charles Djou, decided last week to stop funding the Democratic candidates. National Democrats had hoped that Hawaii party leaders would encourage Democrat voters to support Ed Case in order to stop the vote from being split, but this has not happened - Hawaiian leaders, too, are split on which candiate they support.

A May 2 poll has Djou at 36% of the vote, Case at 28%, and Hanabusa at 22%. With Obama carrying this district in 2008 with 70% of the vote, a Republican victory has been likened to the Scott Brown victory in the Massachusetts special election. Furthermore, this district, which includes Honolulu, is Obama's home district. What better way to send a message to Washington than to have a Republican win over Obama's home district?!
