Cutting Its Nose To Spite Its Face? Seriously?

You know, I had a lot of respect for Debra Medina. She really ran an impressive grassroots campaign for Governor, but then she goes and does something ridiculous and I can't keep my mouth shut.

Earlier this week the Republican Party of Texas denied Mrs. Medina's organization, We Texans, exhibit space for the 2010 state convention. Upon receiving the news, Mrs. Medina sent a letter requesting that the RPT reconsider their decision claiming that the party is "cutting its nose to spite its face".

Yes, the party is in debt; however, Mrs. Medina sued the party after the last convention and still has not conceded a gubernatorial race that she lost months ago. It seems to me that she only wants to play nice with the RPT if we play by HER rules.

This is ridiculous because no organization in their right mind would allow exhibit space to someone who sued them at the last convention. In addition, Mrs. Medina was given a chance to meet with the Rules Committee and they upheld the RPT's policy of not allowing organizations that have sued the party a booth at the convention.

I understand that the Republican Party is not perfect and as Mrs. Medina has pointed out, our party is mired in debt. Fortunately things are beginning to turn around, in October 2009 the State Republican Executive Committee elected Cathie Adams, a staunch conservative who has been involved in grassroots activism for nearly 30 years, to be the new state chairman. Mrs. Adams had previously been President of the Texas Eagle Forum for 17 years.

In just a few months as chairman, Mrs. Adams has lowered the party's debt by at least $68,000. For some reason though, many people have already tried to place blame for the party's debt on Mrs. Adams and throw her under the bus before she even really gets started. If she can lower our debt by that much in a few months then I am sure that with a full 2-year term as chairman Mrs. Adams will get our party's fiscal house in order as it well should be. Cathie Adams is the type of state chairman that Debra Medina and her supporters should be trying to work with, she is a grassroots conservative who has worked tirelessly to fix our fiscal mess.

While Debra Medina is definitely a passionate conservative, I think that by attacking the Republican Party of Texas for denying her an exhibit space, SHE is "cutting her nose". I believe that if she continues to fight this battle she will only ruin her own credibility as there is nothing illogical in the RPT upholding its own rules.

I will be at the RTC June 11, 12, and I really wish the Republican party of Texas would reconsider having her booth there. She sued the party because they didn't follow the rules, and what do you know, she won. But now they want to follow the "rules" and disallow her a space at the convention? Don't make me laugh.

I agree with Ms. Medina.

Actually, the Log Cabin Republicans sued the party and the RPT allows them a booth because the party lost that battle as well. So, the gay Republicans get a booth but Medina does not get one. Hmmmmmm sounds fishy to me.

Debra Medina did not win her lawsuit when she sued the party, she was ordered to pay $14,000 in legal fees and appealed. When she appealed the entire case was dismissed because of questions on its jurisdiction, so at best she got off on a "techincal victory", but she did not really win the case.

And as for the Log Cabin Republicans getting a booth, that is false. I'm not sure where you heard this, but the SREC adopted a resolution in 1999 banning organizations that sue from obtaining exhibit space. According to the RPT they have upheld this resolution since then and anyone who has sued the RPT, including the Log Cabin Republicans, has been denied exhibit space.

It is hypocritical that Medina originally sued the party to make them "follow" their own rules, and now she wants the party to bend the rules in her favor.

Somethings do not change. When an establishment party decides that they don't want to widen their tent, they zero in on people who might actually have a legitimate side of a story, and marginalize them.  Debra Medina WON her case. Are the Repubs sore losers and this is their way of punishing her?  You know, bigger persons would move on and open the public forum.
Everytime I want to join the Republican Party, something like this pops up. Very big of you, Texas.

Exactly. RPT has no integrity, no class and no shame.

I love how in 1999 they put in the rules that if you "sue the party, you get no booth". Protecting the establishment from any part of change. They can do what they want, and then shut you up and keep you from getting any type of information out to the rest of the party.

"We must protect our big govt message/policies at all costs!"

Republican Party Leadership in Texas is such a joke!

the worst thing about censorship is ********************.
coward.

when a "Private" organization that has monopolistic control on which candidates will be on the ballot, restrict your access and ability to "touch" voters and potential campaign volutnteers?

If they'd learn to quit violating their own rules the only other option wouldn't be to (vaguely described), "sue" them. Watch out for the well lubricated political machine when it comes to your state, or...... on the ground with your hands behind your head!

There doesn't seem to be very much 'passion' in your belly because if there were you would be looking at the situation with a little compassion. Now with your feet in her boots, how quickly will you give up?

"I had a lot of Respect for her.." Now you claim her fighting for what's RIGHT, is rediculous, you know the thing that almost no candidate winner or loser has the gumption to do anymore.

What I see here is someone who quite simply wouldn't pull for anyone was merely sitting on the sidelines to cast their vote for the "Projected Winner". Am I wrong?
