A True October Surprise

An unprecedented event occurred this week. “America’s Pastor”, the Reverend Billy Graham, came out in advertisements all over this great Nation encouraging people of all walks to vote for Biblical values, clearly supporting Mitt Romney, and clearly denouncing the Democratic Party leadership’s agenda.

This humble pastor is said to have led more souls to Christ than any modern man of God. His evangelical outreach is legendary. God has granted him unprecedented access to world leaders over his lifetime. He has met and counseled with every president since Harry Truman, and heads of state including Winston Churchill, Mikhail Gorbachev and many others.

He has never publicly revealed how he voted, or which presidential candidate he supported. He has prayed with and advised presidents for half a century—always serving as an “Ambassador for Christ” as he spoke truths to the powerful. He was never involved prior to the elections in any significant way.

Until this week.

In what can be termed a once-in-a-lifetime moment, he has come out clearly and unequivocally calling on Christians to vote for Biblical values. His message has been placed in newspapers and media across this great nation, from USA Today to the venerable Wall Street Journal and everything in between. Though still graciously not mentioning party or named candidate, his recent and good visit with Mitt Romney, clearly on display on the Billy Graham Evangelical Association website with similar language to the ads is not accidentally placed immediately above the website’s very next story—the encouragement to vote Biblical values. Reading between the lines, and taken in the context of Billy Graham’s life, this amounts to a stunning rebuke of the current president’s policies, which seem designed “to steal, and to kill, and to destroy” 1 —including the promoting of the radical homos_xual agenda; destroying human life whether before birth, during birth, or just after birth; and government restrictions on and laws contrary to religious beliefs. Coupled with the recent United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ equally historic and stunning rebuke of the false claims the vice-president made, we are faced with an epic convergence of leading and highly respected leaders in Protestant and Catholic churches in America publicly and unequivocally rebuking the same sitting administration. While the ads being run vary slightly in content from one paper to another, the message is similar in all. In USA Today, the text reads:

"On November 6, the day before my 94th birthday, our nation will hold one of the most critical elections in my lifetime. We are at a crossroads and there are profound moral issues at stake. I strongly urge you to vote for candidates who support the biblical definition of marriage between a man and woman, protect the sanctity of life, and defend our religious freedoms. The Bible speaks clearly on these crucial issues. Please join me in praying for America, that we will turn our hearts back toward God." -- Billy Graham
