Tolerance

On my way to class, I happened to notice a large rainbow flag stretched in front of the Academic Building. It kind of caught me off guard, and I couldn’t figure out what was going on. That was until I noticed the table set up across from this flag and all of the people with “No H8” painted on their faces. This was a huge shock to me. I had heard of the “No H8” Campaign, but I didn’t think I’d see it here in College Station of all places! These people have every right to protest and inform the public of their point of view, regardless of whether or not I agree with their position, but I definitely have a problem with the way they have presented their argument.

For those of you who are not familiar with the “No H8” campaign, it is a silent protest of California’s Proposition 8 which amended the state constitution to ban same-sex marriage. Like I said, these people have every right to protest this voter referendum, but I can’t see why they had to call their campaign “No H8,” which implies that those opposed to same-sex marriage are hateful. Unfortunately, this is very typical of the left; if someone disagrees with you, it’s probably because they have hate in their heart.

This false assumption bothers me so much because the majority of conservatives are Christians, and the Christian faith does not preach hate. Why is it that they can’t just accept that we disagree with them? Having a difference of opinion does not make us hateful, it just makes us different, which ironically is kind of what this campaign aims at teaching. We’re all different and their is nothing wrong with having different points of view . . . unless you’re a conservative because then you’re racist, ignorant, hateful, or a slew of other negative adjectives.

This mentality is not unique to the “No H8” campaign. It is actually very typical of the left regardless of the topic. As much as they try to preach diversity, they actually like to assume that every demographic group is monolithic in thought and that any disagreement within a group or with a group means that you must be intolerant. This is so ridiculous because in the process, leftists themselves end up being intolerant.

On a related note, I have myself experienced the intolerance of the left. On many cases I have been told, by white liberals, that I have to vote the same way they do because of my last name, and because of where I’m from. This is exactly what I’m talking about. The left wants everyone to fit into some sort of electoral niche when the reality is we are all able of thinking for ourselves and just because we disagree at times doesn’t mean that we are hateful . . . we’re just, simply put, different.
