(VIDEO, PHOTOS) Occupy Wall Street Protests in Washington, DC

In Washington, D.C., ground zero for the "occupy DC" protests is in McPherson Square, however starting on Thursday, October 6, just before Columbus Day Weekend, the crowd amassed at Freedom Plaza at Pennsylvania Ave and 14th Street, just a few blocks away from the White House and not far from the U.S. Capitol Building. The leaderless movement had a well-appointed stage in place on the plaza, including a large backdrop with a graphic of the text of the U.S. Constitution and "We the People" prominently displayed at the top... Just the kind of graphic so often seen at Tea Party rallies. Next to the stage was a "media" booth, and there were plenty of news media trucks and cameras on site.

The crowd participating included hipsters, grandmas, military vets, musicians, homeless people, and people of various ages and backgrounds. Was it an ethnically diverse cross section of American society?  You can judge for yourself (VIDEO below).

Some of the many themes on display in DC included ending U.S. wars overseas, ending corporate personhood, protesting corporate greed and saving the planet and a dissatisfaction with Barack Obama and U.S. government.

Additional posts to follow will include statements from participants as well as additional pictures and video of the "occupy" protests from Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York City.
