Expanding Trade for a Stronger Economy

Last week, the House Ways and Means Committee, under the leadership of Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI), passed the Trade Priorities and Accountability Act (TPA). TPA empowers Congress to outline trade priorities for the President to adhere to during trade negotiations with other countries. Under TPA, Congress can also override the President’s authority with a disapproval vote and completely stop an agreement.

According to the Business Roundtable, trade supports more than 1 in 5 American jobs. In Texas, trade supports nearly 3 million jobs—the second highest out of any state in the country. For our economy to reach its full potential and to create more good-paying jobs here at home, we need smart trade policies in place that prioritize the rule of law and open new markets for American products. TPA is supported by conservative groups like the American Conservative Union, the National Taxpayers Union, and the American Enterprise Institute.
