Former IRS Tax Examiner and 3 Other FL Residents Sentenced in Gulf Oil Spill Fraud
A former IRS tax examiner and three other residents of Pensacola, Florida were sentenced recently in a fraud scheme connected to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The four Floridians pleaded guilty early this year to committing mail fraud.
Jimmie McCorvey, the former IRS tax examiner, along with his wife Marcia McCorvey were sentenced last Thursday to seventy-two months, and twelve months and one day respectively, according to a statement from the FBI office in the Northern District of Florida obtained by Breitbart Texas. Rosa M. Bonner and Ariyanna S. Lampley were sentenced in June to twenty-seven and forty-eight months respectively.
The defendants admitted to conspiracy to commit mail fraud. They filed fraudulent claims with the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF) and claimed they had lost income due to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The defendants agreed to have Jimmie MCCorvey file false claims in their names. They sought to recover more than $327,000, court records revealed (below).
The claims alleged they had lost earnings and profits due to the oil spill between 2010 and 2012. The GCCF paid out nearly $100,000 in response to the false claims.
Additionally, Jimmie McCorvey also admitted to filing twenty-five fraudulent IRS tax returns. These tax returns led to nearly $100,000 being paid out in returns to the defendants.
Lampley had control of the bank accounts that received the tax refunds.
The case was investigated by the FBI and the IRS. It was prosecuted in the Northern District of Florida by Assistant U.S. Attorney Alicia Kim.
