Pete Sessions Statement on the April Jobs Report

Last week the U.S. Commerce Department reported that the U.S. economy slowed dramatically with GDP growing at a disappointing 0.2 percent in the first quarter. In addition, the export of goods and services slowed to 7.2 percent with the export of goods alone slowing to 13.3 percent – the sharpest decline since the Great Recession. While today’s job report reflects positive employment news, these numbers show the fragility of our economic recovery and underscore the necessity to take bold action to get our economy back on track. Americans are fed up with big government policies that have only produced inconsistent economic growth and uncertainty. I am committed to working on real solutions that give Americans the opportunities they need and deserve.

House Republicans understand what it takes to bolster our economy and give hard working Americans the opportunities they need to find good jobs. That is why I have been working closely with Chairman Paul Ryan on vital legislation that would reinvigorate our economy and put Americans back to work. The Trade Priorities and Accountability Act of 2015 is a key component to a free trade agenda that grows the economy, creates good paying jobs, and lowers prices for American families. With 95 percent of the world’s population and 80 percent of the world’s purchasing power outside the United States, future American economic growth and job creation depends on open markets abroad.

My home state of Texas is the best example of how Americans can prosper through international trade. Last year, Texas led the nation for the 13th year in a row with a total of $289 billion worth of exports and 1.1 million jobs. Future trade agreements will lead to $14 billion in global investment in Texas as well create 120,000 new jobs. I believe TPA will be a catalyst for economic growth and I will continue to fight for solutions such as these that will spur robust economic growth and create good-paying, full time jobs for Americans across the country.
