Pete Sessions Statement on the May Jobs Report

While today’s jobs report brings welcome news, I believe we can and must do more to expand our economy and create more good paying, full time jobs. With the GDP contracting at 0.7 percent in the first quarter, and approximately 17 million Americans still out of work, it is critical that we expand our horizons and seize on every opportunity to get the American economy back on track.

The Trade Promotion Authority Act presents us with the opportunity to unleash America’s economy by breaking down trade barriers and allowing us to participate and excel in the global marketplace. With 95 percent of the world’s population and 80 percent of the world’s purchasing power outside the United States, future American economic growth and job creation depends on open markets abroad.

I have always been a fierce supporter of free trade and I believe this legislation is key to making real strides in our economic recovery. Currently, more than 38 million jobs are tied to trade, with 1.1 million of those in Texas, and 160,758 in the 32nd Congressional District. Future trade agreements will lead to approximately 120,000 new jobs and $14 billion in global investment in Texas alone. These numbers show the true potential that free trade presents to the American economy and the American worker. Now is the time to pass this job creating legislation to provide Texans and Americans across the country with the opportunities they need and deserve.
