Leaders Are Called

Leaders Are Called – Some Will Answer

True leaders are servant leaders, who answer the call to lead when challenges and crises arise. While not all who are called choose to answer that call, those who are answering that challenge today are essential to maintaining and restoring the Judeo- Christian values that are the bedrock of our society. The recent Supreme Court decision on gay marriage is already limiting our First Amendment Right to free exercise of religion. From pizza parlors that refuse to cater gay weddings to photographers who decline gay couples’ business, we are seeing the heavy hand of a tyrannical government repress the religious freedom our founders sought to protect in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. Just as with abortion, we need to reach out to those who are approachable and change their hearts with factual education so they can see the truth. The left has sullied the definition of marriage with the oxymoronic term “gay marriage”, aided by their willing accomplices in the press. It will be grassroots leadership that answers the call to this crisis, not Washington. One servant leader who has answered this call is Dianne Edmondson, Chairman of the Denton County Republican Party.

Defeating ERA and Defending the Sanctity of Life

When the Equal Rights Amendment was just eight states short of ratification in 1972, Dianne answered Phyllis Schlafly’s call to arms as she joined a group of 100 future leaders who would become the foundation of the Eagle Forum. Phyllis galvanized this group of valiant women and housewives who defeated the ERA. This victory was the genesis of the Moral Majority which was the springboard for President Ronald Reagan’s two landslide victories.

Dianne’s sacred commitment to protecting the sanctity of life for over 42 years included serving as Republican National Coalition for Life Executive Director. When an activist Supreme Court made abortion the law of the land, sans the legislative process, abortion activists believed future generations would embrace it unconditionally. As a first responder to stand on the front lines challenging the passage of Roe v. Wade , her unrelenting dedication has culminated , over 42 years later, with both Gallup and CNN polls finding that 58% of Americans oppose abortions in all or most cases .While technology played a large part in this turnaround by showing the viability of life at conception, the truth may have never come to prominence had the issue not been kept at the forefront for over 40 years by Dianne and other stalwarts for the sanctity of life. The pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute estimates that more pro- life bills passed in the last three years than in the previous decade.

Servant Leadership

In light of the recent gay marriage decision, once again Dianne Edmondson is one of the leaders who is reaffirming that the traditional family and traditional marriage are the cornerstones of our culture and heritage.

Just as she demonstrated in the battle against the ERA, and while contesting assaults on the sanctity of life, Dianne is philosophically correct (not politically correct) and articulate in assertively standing firm on her core beliefs. Little known but very significant was her leadership in the July DCRP monthly meeting. In so many words she said in her matter of fact manner ‘I have been here before and this is what you do when you face adversity.’ Dianne led precinct chairmen and officers in reciting the following from the Texas Republican Party Platform of 2014:

Celebrating Traditional Marriage: Family and Defense of marriage

We support the definition of marriage as a God - ordained, legal and moral commitment only between a natural man and a natural woman.

We support withholding jurisdiction from the federal courts in cases involving family law, especially any changes in the definition of marriage.

We shall not recognize or grant to any unmarried person the legal rights or status of a spouse.

We oppose the recognition of and granting of benefits to people who represent themselves as domestic partners without being legally married.

We urge the legislature to rescind no-fault divorce laws and support covenant marriage.

Standing on Principal

These are basic truths that five unelected, unaccountable Supreme Court justices will not shred from our moral fabric. The gay rights movement will soon stagnate when trying to convince tens of millions of Christians of the validity of same sex marriage .Just as with the lack of Scriptural support for abortion, gay marriage will face many of the same challenges abortion activists did, with a similar outcome. Leaders like Dianne Edmondson do not submit to the when they tell us to get “over it” and “move on.” They told us Roe v. Wade was the law of the land and also. Dianne Edmondson did not cede on the abortion issue and will not yield to the left’s totalitarian aim of dominating the culture by eliminating all dissent as they seek to quash those who express moral disagreement. Dianne Edmondson is answering this call to serve just as she did when called to stand against the ERA and to protect the sanctity of life.
