State and Federal Assistance Available After Severe Storms

Several dozen counties in Texas, including many in our area, that were hit by severe storms between May 4 and June 19 are now eligible to apply for government assistance. Homeowners, renters, and farmers who were affected by severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds, and flooding can apply for the Individual Assistance program. The program helps pay for rent, temporary housing, home repairs, clothing, and – in serious-related disasters – medical and dental costs and funeral and burial costs. Small business owners may also qualify for small business loans through the Small Business Administration.

For those needing more information, or to apply, visit www.disasterassistance.gov. FEMA encourages anyone in Texas with storm damage to register even if you already have insurance. Those whose insurance does not cover the full cost of the damage may be eligible for assistance.

If you receive a letter of ineligibility from FEMA, you have 60 days to appeal that decision and ask for a review of your case. All formal appeals must be in writing. You may call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 or visit a Disaster Recovery Center to discuss the letter. To find the nearest DRC, go online to http://asd.fema.gov/inter/locator/home.htm.
