Farenthold’s OPEN Government Data Act Included in Defense Authorization Bill Passed by the Senate

My OPEN Government Data Act is one step closer to becoming law, after the bill’s language was included as an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that the Senate passed Monday evening.

In March, Rep. Derek Kilmer (D-WA), Senators Ben Sasse (R-NE) and Brian Schatz (D-HI), and I reintroduced the Open, Public, Electronic, and Necessary (OPEN) Government Data Act, which would require public data be accessible at data.gov so the data can be used by individuals, organizations, and other government organizations.

This data should be accessible to taxpayers because they’re already paying for it. I think people’s lives will be improved from the many new innovative ways people will use this data.

The OPEN Government Data Act would require the data be available at data.gov in a machine-readable format to make it easily searchable and accessible to anyone.

The NDAA now heads to a conference committee with the House. I am confident this language will be included in the final bill.
