Congressman Neugebauer Bill to Reduce Windstorm Damage and Save Lives

The House of Representatives voted yesterday on my bill to reduce windstorm damage across America. It promotes research to help save lives, reduce injuries, and lessen communities’ damage from windstorms. Those of us who have experienced these disasters – like the 1970 storm I experienced in Lubbock that took 26 lives – know their devastating effects. And the U.S. averages about 1300 tornadoes a year.

I’m also proud my bill can reduce government spending on disaster relief. We’ll invest money in mitigation and research at places like Texas Tech’s National Wind Institute up front, but those investments can save up to four times the amount we would need to spend in emergency disaster response. My bill passed the Science Committee earlier this year with strong bipartisan support, and am pleased that my colleagues in the House also agreed and passed this bill yesterday.
