Our Veterans Deserve a VA That Works for Them

I was deeply troubled and frustrated by the lack of quality care and accountability at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Our nation’s veterans, who have sacrificed so much in defense of our freedom, deserve a VA that works for them, and provides the best quality care. To make sure we meet the needs of our heroes, I was proud to support today’s bill, Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act of 2014, that brings some much-needed reforms to the VA healthcare system.

This bill improves access to care by allowing our veterans to seek private care if they do not live near a VA facility or cannot get an appointment in a timely manner. This bill also makes it easier to fire and hold senior managers accountable if they are not properly meeting the needs of our veterans, and cuts bonuses to VA officials.

I am very pleased that these reforms also included the authorization of a new VA medical facility in Lubbock. This has been one of my top priorities in Congress and is a great victory for our West Texas veterans who have earned the best possible care.
