Thursday I spoke on the Senate floor about the House-passed stopgap spending measure that would ensure our troops continue to receive the paychecks they deserve and the President’s subsequent threat to veto that measure:

Smith Supports Troop Funding Bill

Today, I issued the following statement regarding House passage of a bill to fully fund the Department of Defense for the remainder of the fiscal year and provide a one-week continuing resolution of other government spending at reduced levels.

We need to resolve our nation’s long-term budget and cut spending, but there is no excuse to hold military pay hostage in this budget debate. House Republicans just passed a continuing resolution that would fund military personnel for the rest of the fiscal year,

Texas Legislature Moving to Curtail Employee Misclassification and Fraud

Employee misclassification is theft and cheating. Misclassification is where an employer hires someone to work for them, but rather than honestly classify them an employee, they misclassify them as an independent contractor, avoiding tax witholdings, unemployment taxes, child support collection, workman's compensation benefits and other employee benefits. This is usually done to gain an unfair business advantage over a legitimate employer who follows the law and works ethically or to cheat workers from pay and benefits.  Legislation addressing misclassification can reduce these problems while also serving as a disincentive to hire illegal aliens.   Read more »

A Message from Israel

A woman I've come to know, Liba, who lives in the United States has a son David who lives in Jerusalem with his wife Dalia and children Shai, Adi, and Tomer. They live a few blocks away from the parents of Ruth Fogel. I've pasted her note to me below as she sent it so you can delight in the way Liba expresses herself. I have come to know and love her. I have spoken to her son David. He is in the Israel service. I have also included this beautiful video from Israel with Tamar Fogel, the 12-year-old who came home to find her family murdered, that Liba sent me.

Recalled to Life, slight return

A little over a year ago, I published the main portion of this article. After reading through it again, I felt it was important to share it with you all again. I welcome you all to the fold of concerned Fellow Patriots. We all are aware of the changes that our great Republic has undergone over the course of mainly the past two years, but in truth, over the span of our lifetime. In the past, before the modern age of Twitter, Facebook, the internet and e-mails, 24 hour news channels, we were just members of the American herd, working hard everyday, nose to the grind stones, so to speak. We did our duties, and at evening, we turned to the three trusted purveyors of what we thought was honest news. We have since learned that that was just an illusion.   Read more »

Texas Budget Cuts - House Looking at Tapping Some of Rainy Day Fund - Why this might be good

Message submitted by Republican, Conservative activist Sharon Roberts about the current state of the Texas Budget and why it may be necessary to lightly tap into the Texas Rainy Day Fund.

This week, our legislature will be discussing and voting on our budget. Having spent a lot of time studying, reviewing and talking to legislators, I have come to a conclusion. It is imperative we pass this budget. It is a good solution to a very difficult issue. Originally I had thought it best to not touch the rainy day fund. Having looked at all the facts and the projections on the unfunded mandates, it is the best solution we have at this time.

Life Ethics

Presentation to Texas GOP Vote in Austin, Texas, March 25, 2011:

If you crack the egg of a bird on the Endangered Species List, it won’t matter that the bird was a fetus or embryo. You’ve still broken Federal law. Why is the species of an (unhatched) animal so clear cut under law, but human embryos have no protection under current law?
