Food Stamp Glitch Gives Shoppers Unlimited Funds for Two Hours

During a routine maintenance test by Xerox, a food stamp (EBT) vendor, a power outage caused a glitch in the cards in Springhill and Mansfield, LA. As a result, for two hours, the cards were showing no limit on the amount of government-funded money card-holders could spend, enabling them to clear out the shelves of Wal-Mart. Some customers were leaving the store with nearly ten cartfuls of food filled to the brim.

Wal-Mart had to stop selling food at 9PM due to their shelves being completely depleted. Once the glitch was fixed and limits came back on the cards, people left their carts abandoned in the middle of the store and walked out. It took until the next afternoon for employees to restock the shelves.
