Stop Big Government
The following press release was sent out by the NRA's Institute for Legislative Affairs:
As we reported last month, on April 2, the United Nations General Assembly voted 153-4 to pass the Arms Trade Treaty, with the United States voting in favor and several countries abstaining. The vote in the General Assembly pushed the treaty process forward after negotiations twice failed to deliver on the goal of developing the treaty by consensus. The Obama Administration is expected to sign the treaty soon after it is opened for signature on June 3. Read more »
This week, I introduced H.R. 1962, the Free Flow of Information Act of 2013. This bill will protect reporters from being compelled to reveal their confidential news sources in federal court proceedings. Specifically, the bill would maintain the free flow of information to the public by providing conditions for the federally compelled disclosure of information by certain persons connected with the news media. The events that have unfolded over the past week are showing big government at its worst. First we learned more details about the Obama administration’s coordinated attempt to misrepresent the September 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, which claimed four American lives. Then a senior IRS official acknowledged that her agency had deliberately targeted conservative groups for harassment. Meanwhile, the administration was forced to admit
At a House Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday, I questioned Attorney General Eric Holder about the Justice Department’s investigation into allegations that IRS employees intentionally targeted conservative organizations, including Tea Party-affiliated groups, for additional scrutiny in their applications for tax-exempt status.
Specifically, I asked if the Department’s investigation would be limited to the Ohio allegations or if it would be a nationwide investigation that examines allegations of unfair targeting of conservative
Think about the things that Texas is known for. Oil, trucks, cowboys, cows and big city life. Also, a gun loving governor and a booming economy. Oh, yeah and the myth that everything is bigger in Texas, right? We've got big trucks, big hair and...big government? Big government, you say? Sadly, yes.
Back in 1999, the Texas Legislature signed a bill into law that granted a panel of doctors, appointed by the hospital in which they work, to help with end of life directives. What does that mean, exactly? Well, if you wanted to go all Sarah Palin, then, I guess you could call these death panels. As we all know, the 83rd legislative session of the Texas house is coming to a close. This year proved to be a fairly quiet one, until now. The current legislative body has apparently
Here is a thought: what if our atmosphere needs more CO2 as opposed to less? Harrison Schmitt, former astronaut and current professor at University of Wisconsin at Madison, and Professor William Happier of Princeton wrote recently, “Contrary to what some would have us believe, increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will benefit the increasing population on the planet by increasing agricultural productivity.” This is the complete opposite of what we are being told, but it does make sense for three reasons.
Last week, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials admitted that they targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny in 2012. Specifically, the IRS flagged groups that had “tea party” or “patriot” in their application for tax-exempt status. These groups were subjected to intense scrutiny which many said hindered their activities. They were asked to fill out forms that requested information about their donors. Additionally, they had to submit information about group members' political activities, including details of their postings on social networking websites. As more information is becoming public from an internal investigation, it seems that the IRS targeted a wide range of groups, including those whose mission mentions government spending, debt, or making America a better place to live. You want to know the meaning of Benghazi? It is very simple: the only person so far who has been punished was the filmmaker Nakoula Basseley. Nakoula produced the now infamous youtube video on the prophet Mohammed, which we now know did not cause the Benghazi attack. As for those in charge, we now know they lied to the American people, they intimidated witnesses, and an innocent man was put into jail where he still sits.
Tea party groups' allegations that the IRS has long been targeting them for their political beliefs were recently confirmed by an apology from the IRS. The scandal gained traction as congressional leaders began efforts to hold the IRS accountable and understand the depths of the federal government’s politically-motivated abuses of power. Read more »
