It does not matter what the polls say, most Americans don’t like what Donald Trump is saying

Some years back at the 2008 RNC Convention, I was in St. Paul, MN as a National Delegate from Texas, and my husband and I met Republican pollster and analyst Dr. Frank Luntz, the author of one of the best books on good communication that I have read. His book, Words That Work: It's Not What You Say, It's What People Hear, is priceless, easy to read, and intelligent on the craft of effective language. We have purchased that book more than any other- besides the Bible- to give away to other people. Dr. Luntz gives in his book- which is also in audio form- remarkable illustrations about why people have to be careful about how you say what you say and how rephrasing the same idea can completely alter the outcome and perception of an idea. He also examines how choosing the right words is essential to communicate a consistent and insightful message well. Donald Trump needs to read Dr. Luntz's book and learn from it. As the days pass, Mr. Trump continues saying the most inflammatory words we have ever heard coming from a presidential candidate. It does not matter what the polls say for the Republican primary. Most Americans don’t like what Donald Trump is saying.

The latest? The revelations of his past remarks to a lactating mother. Elizabeth Beck was a lawyer in a deposition with Donald Trump a few years ago. Regardless of what the deposition was about or how good or bad of an attorney she is or was, the issue here is that Beck clearly says that she had pre-negotiated breaks during the deposition in order for her to pump her breast milk for her 3-month-old daughter. When she requested the pre-negotiated medical break, Trump and his lawyers contested it. They wanted her to continue the deposition without taking the agreed upon time for a break. Beck showed the breast pump to Trump to remind them that it was her pre- negotiated “pumping breast-milk time,” Elizabeth Beck shared in an interview, and she said Trump's reaction was: "He got up, his face got red, he shook his finger at me and he screamed, ‘You’re disgusting, you’re disgusting,’ and he ran out of there." She called his behavior “an absolute meltdown.”

Two decades ago, as a young woman, I became the mom of a 31-week premature 4 pound baby. I had to pump my breast milk to feed my baby. It was a very difficult time, especially for those like me who care about modesty. First time moms (and second, third, etc.) know pretty well that when the milk flows inside the breasts, it can become very painful, uncomfortable and even scary. But we decide to give breast milk to our babies because we want the best for them.

Pumping breast milk is intimidating, and sometimes embarrassing to talk about. It involves the breasts. The milk "flows" naturally and sometimes the milk may accidentally "leak" out, if is not pumped at the right time. It is not a “female duty” or a “human fluid” that you can control as your own decision or desire.

Women give breast milk to their babies so they may get the best nourishment and grow. According to the experts of Baby Center, “You may also use a breast pump to stimulate your milk production and boost your supply, to collect milk to feed a premature baby or one who can't latch on to your breast, or to relieve the pain and pressure of engorged breasts." Pumping allows women to keep the milk supply. If the milk is not pumped at the right time, the mother’s milk supply has the risk of drying out and not being able to continue providing that milk for the child. To call the act of pumping breast milk to feed a baby "disgusting" is offensive.

Once again, the issue is NOT that Mrs. Beck was in a deposition and her duty was to continue. Mr. Trump could not decide what time the break needed to be taken. The issue is not about who Mrs. Beck is voting for president this coming election that is irrelevant here; the issue, again, is the harsh rhetoric against a lactating woman who let him know in advance about the pumping break, which he and his attorneys had agreed to. These examples of harsh rhetoric are just a few examples of the way Mr. Trump communicates.

Do you want, as president, a man who speaks with harsh rhetoric on issues that he does not understand and is not interested in understanding, who has flip flopped over issues like gun control, abortion, healthcare, taxation, etc.? Do you want a man who has said he will not apologize to anyone after using harsh rhetoric, that he will not ask forgiveness, not even from God - as he said to Dr. Frank Luntz? At a later, longer interview with Anderson Cooper, he said, “Why do I have to repent? Why do I have to ask for forgiveness if I'm not making mistakes?"

Are you concerned with the big trouble that this man could cause for the United States of America as leader of our country? Regardless of some sound bites that conservatives like to hear, Donald Trump is a figure of contention. Yes, he is a VERY rich and powerful man. He is someone who can do whatever he wants, have whatever he wants, have the freedom to say that he will not apologize, as he will not have financial consequences for his campaign. He is used to being served, frowning upon others, and not giving accountability to anyone. He has said that if he does not win the Republican nomination, he probably will not support the nominee but run as an independent.

All these issues have been distracting voters from listening to the plans and solutions that other GOP candidates have to offer to our great country. Trust me, I do not desire to continue talking about Trump; as most of you, I am tired of it! Sadly, he is the number one issue people bring up when I am interviewed and when I have political conversations, so I feel obligated to respond. 95% of the time, I've realized, that most people from the GOP dislike him. However, Trump's high numbers in the “polls” are allowing him to participate in the first debate and take a spot from a more viable and qualified contender. Due to these “polls,” it is unfortunate to realize that we will not see others - like Carly Fiorina, the only Republican woman and a fresh candidate who will turn the conversation around – during the first debate. There are many outstanding, capable and serious candidates, and this “Trump circus” has been distracting others from listening to real solutions for our country, coming from all these experienced men and woman.

Donald Trump’s shocking remarks and reaction to women pumping breast milk to feed their babies, the awful remarks to men and women who have been captured as prisoners of war and who served and fight for our freedom, the hateful remarks made to Mexican immigrants who have come to America, the remarks to every American who believes that people need respect, decency and honor, among many other hateful comments, are not the remarks needed coming from the mouth of the leader of the most powerful and exceptional country in the world.
