Hoyt’s Inexperience Trumps Perez’s 15 Years Experience For Comal County District Clerk

Comal County experienced an outcome in the Republican primary race that was not expected. The District Clerk’s race was contentious because of the two candidates involved. Cherie Perez a hometown girl with 15 years experience in the District Clerk’s office and backed by three former Republican Party chairmen even though she had previously voted Democrat. She was favored to win because of her tenure in the position and the Republican support she garnered. It is not uncommon for an American Hispanic to switch parties and make the decision to vote on her values and not on the family political history.

Kristen Hoyt, 24, new to New Braunfels and Comal County has only worked as a Marketing Director for Chick-Fil-A for as long as she has been a resident, one and a half years. I spoke to the store manager, Ryan Leedy, where Hoyt is employed and according to the manager, Hoyt ‘does her own thing’. After his comments I asked him, “Do you mean she is a part time employee” and he answered “yes, you might say that.” She doesn’t even have a desk at the location. What made Hoyt a suspect candidate in the community is the fact that her husband, Matthew, has strong ties with the Obama Administration thus a Red Flag was waving.

So here we have two candidates one experienced and very well qualified Hispanic and one without any experience with the District Clerk’s office or county government and affiliated with Obama. To make matters even more interesting is the fact that Perez’ name was first and Hoyt’s name was second on the ballot. We all know that the low information voters usually vote the first name on the ballot. That is people voting without knowing the candidate. As Republicans shouldn’t we want to vote for the most qualified candidate, the most able to perform the duties for the position we elect them to regardless of skin color?

Since Perez’ name was first on the ballot, voters had to skip her Hispanic surname and cast their vote for the non Hispanic surname. Either the voters in Comal County are low information or they knew exactly who they did not want as their next District Clerk. No getting around this one.

Hoyt is not to blame for any discrimination as I see it, she won her race. The count came in and she will be our next District Clerk. My frustration is with the Comal County voters. What were you thinking when you cast your vote for someone with absolutely no county government experience?

In lieu of the fact that Hoyt had won, I proceeded to contact her so we could get to know her better. When I spoke to her on the phone she told me she was ‘slammed’ and did not have the time to speak to me but would call me sometime later that day. She never called but I did receive a note from her husband Matthew via Facebook.

Sonja, this is Matthew, Kristen's husband. She called and asked me to message you. She is slammed today but said if you will send her your questions she will try to get back with you asap (hopefully sometime this afternoon.) We are still playing catchup over here...

Thanks for responding. I have interviewed many notable people and I prefer to speak to the person I am interviewing. So please have her call me.

We now have on record her husband Matthew answering for her and asking me for the questions I was planning to ask. Hope that the voters in Comal County are satisfied that her Democrat husband who has ties to Obama will be screening her calls. So there you have it folks, a part time employee with no real work history will run the District Clerk’s office that has tremendous responsibilities. Given the fact that I was so wrong in this race, I will allow that perhaps Hoyt was misjudged and that she will emerge as a very capable District Clerk. She has the moxie to prove us all wrong.

For those that may be interested in the demographics of Comal County, there are 114,384 residents from the 2012 census of which 71.3% are White and 24.9% are Hispanic with only 1.5% Black. I have also included all the Comal County Precincts and how each one voted on the District Clerk’s race.

Understandably, we should all be alarmed if in fact there is a situation in Comal County and we should not be willing to ‘sweep it under the rug’. We should instead inform our voters that the Republican Party welcomes all who want to embrace its platform, its values. With the growing Hispanic population in Texas, it would be a grave mistake to overlook qualified candidates willing to take on the responsibilities of an elected official. Furthermore, it is even scarier to think that this particular race was based on emotion or superficial factors or a stealth agenda.

Congratulations are in order for winning the District Clerk’s race, Kristen Hoyt!
