This Week in the House

This week the House Rules Committee held a hearing on the draft resolution that would provide authority to initiate a lawsuit on behalf of the House of Representatives against the President for failing to carry out his constitutional duties. All elected federal officials take an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and it is our duty to ensure that it is vigorously protected. I believe that authorizing this lawsuit is a necessary step to hold the President accountable for failing to faithfully execute the law. Our Constitution requires that the Congress write the law and the President execute the law. Instead of following the requirements of the Constitution, this President, on a number of issues, has tried to combine the power to write the law with the power to execute the law in his hands and his hands alone. This executive overreach cannot stand.

Upholding our system of laws and separation of powers is not a partisan issue. If Congress doesn’t act now, I fear the damage to our Constitution and to our Republic will be irreversible. I will continue to defend the ideals and values penned by our Founding Fathers and ensure that each branch of government stays within the parameters of their constitutional powers.
