Meeting with Law Enforcement to Protect the District

Last week, I hosted a round table meeting to bring local and federal law enforcement officials together. Local sheriffs and police chiefs from across the district I represent joined me in Victoria to share concerns with me and federal officials from Border Patrol, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and others. The bulk of the conversation was about how law enforcement groups can better cooperate. Local law enforcement remains concerned about the president’s priority enforcement programs that results in their having to release illegal aliens they have arrested when they do not qualify for deportation under the president’s policies.

Other topics discussed included human smuggling and trafficking and how often someone who is smuggled into this country becomes a trafficking victim when they are forced into labor or the sex industry, funding for programs to train local officers to better work with Homeland Security and better intelligence sharing.

Afterwards, we held a press conference that can be seen here.
