Brandon Creighton and Dan Branch: Key Lieutenants for Straus Leadership Team

In an article for the Capitol Inside, Mike Hailey discusses Texas Senate District 4 Special Election candidate Rep. Brandon Creighton's perceived upcoming endorsement of Senator Ken Paxton for Texas Attorney General. Brandon Creighton, as well as Ken Paxton's run-off opponent Rep. Dan Branch, are both represented by seasoned political consultant Ted Delisi, which could turn into quite the predicament for Delisi. However, as an establishment Republican and a key lieutenant on House Speaker Joe Straus' leadership team, there is speculation that Creighton is simply using this endorsement to make inroads with tea party activists.   Read more »

Texas Tribune: Stimulus Fund Allegations Spice Up Texas AG Race

The Texas tribune has reported that one of the businesses that Ken Paxton is an owner of accepted a substantial amount of money from Obama’s stimulus money. The article also explains Dan Branch’s connections to stimulus money. I am not going to comment on the article because it speaks for itself. You can read the entire article here. Below are some of the highlights from the Tribune article:   Read more »

Will Texas Republican Legislators Finally Get Serious About Worker Misclassification?

For the past several years, the Republican-led Texas Legislature has failed to make significant progress in stopping the abuses of workers through unethical employment practices. Many businesses, particularly in the construction industry, carry on a practice of classifying workers as independent contractors when they are truly employees, according to existing law.

Lawmakers have attempted to bring bills to the floor to stop the practice of companies that cheat workers and taxpayers and game the system to obtain an unfair competitive business advantage over companies who follow the law. These bills have repeatedly died in various committees because of pressure from a relatively few, but very powerful, home builders who make millions by cheating.   Read more »

Texas Attorney General Candidate Barry Smitherman Discusses Government Transparency & Border Security

Texas Railroad Commission Chairman and candidate for Texas Attorney General, Barry Smitherman, sat down with TexasGOPVote recently to discuss transparency in government and how the Texas Attorney General's Office can help the border regions with border security related issues and crimes. Smitherman is currently in a three-way race to succeed Attorney General Greg Abbott who is currently running for Governor in the 2014 Republican Primary to be held March 4th.

Transparency in Government

Gen. Abbott set transparency in government as one of his key issues in his race for Texas Governor. I asked Commissioner Smitherman to comment on this issue and specifically

UN Arms Treaty Makes NRA Evaluation of Texas Attorney General Candidates Crucial

Texas AG CandidatesOne of the biggest issues potentially facing the next Attorney General of Texas may well be defending the 2nd Amendment rights of Texans against President Obama's Administration's signing of the United Nations Small Arms Treaty and a potential ratification of said treaty by a Democrat controlled Senate. This could make the NRA's evaluation of our AG candidates even more crucial than in normal elections.   Read more »

Illegal Immigration - A Federal Responsibility that Creates Texas-Size Problems for Texans

Texas DPS Protecting Texans from Illegal ImmigrationA lot of Texas politicians are quick to blame the federal government for the problems in Texas related to illegal immigration. While working with U.S. Border Watch, I have had the opportunity to speak with a lot of Texas elected officials about these problems, particularly those being faced in South Texas that are directly related to illegal immigration. Most often the response has been, immigration is a federal issue, we cannot enforce federal law.   Read more »

Barry Smitherman is ONLY Texas AG Candidate with CHL - Most Trusted on Gun Rights

Barry Smitherman is the ONLY candidate in the Texas Attorney General race with a Concealed Handgun License (CHL). The fact that Barry Smitherman actually packs heat, on top of the fact that he got an A+ rating in 2012 from the National Rifle Association (NRA), is why I believe that Barry Smitherman is clearly the best gun rights Texas AG candidate over Ken Paxton and Dan Branch. Anyone can talk a good talk about supporting gun rights, but Barry Smitherman actually practices his right to bear arms.

The Race for Texas Attorney General - Barry Smitherman's Record

AG Candidate Barry SmithermanNote: The sixth paragraph of this article as been updated to correct an error. The original article stated Smitherman had received an "A" rating from the NRA. It is, in fact, an "A+" rating. The author apologizes for underestating the commissioner's oustanding record on the 2nd Amendment.

Earlier this week we looked at the legislative record of State Representative Dan Branch and found a surprising record where he offered an amendment to a bill that would have expanded third trimester abortion rights in Texas. This illustrates why a candidate's record is important. Opponents of Smitherman like to point out that he does not have a legislative voting record. I think that is a pretty weak argument. Records are important, but you don't have to be a legislator to have a record. Berry Smitherman has a strong and easy-to-find record of public service to the people of Texas.   Read more »

AG Candidate Dan Branch Joined House Democrats Seeking to Expand 3rd Trimester Abortions

Dan Branch's weak record on lifeIn the wake of yesterday's court ruling blocking Texas from implementing portions of its newly passed pro-life law requiring abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of their abortion facility, it becomes even more clear why we must have a Texas Attorney General who is as solidly pro-life as our current AG, Greg Abbott. After a little research into the records of the candidates to succeed Abbott, it is apparent one candidate does not fill those shoes - Dan Branch.   Read more »
