Congressman Poe Introduces The “Free Flow Of Information Act Of 2013”

This week, I introduced H.R. 1962, the Free Flow of Information Act of 2013. This bill will protect reporters from being compelled to reveal their confidential news sources in federal court proceedings. Specifically, the bill would maintain the free flow of information to the public by providing conditions for the federally compelled disclosure of information by certain persons connected with the news media.   Read more »

Congressman Lamar Smith Demands Nationwide Investigation of IRS

At a House Judiciary Committee hearing yesterday, I questioned Attorney General Eric Holder about the Justice Department’s investigation into allegations that IRS employees intentionally targeted conservative organizations, including Tea Party-affiliated groups, for additional scrutiny in their applications for tax-exempt status.

Specifically, I asked if the Department’s investigation would be limited to the Ohio allegations or if it would be a nationwide investigation that examines allegations of unfair targeting of conservative

IRS Harassment of Conservative Groups

Last week, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) officials admitted that they targeted conservative groups for extra scrutiny in 2012. Specifically, the IRS flagged groups that had “tea party” or “patriot” in their application for tax-exempt status. These groups were subjected to intense scrutiny which many said hindered their activities. They were asked to fill out forms that requested information about their donors. Additionally, they had to submit information about group members' political activities, including details of their postings on social networking websites. As more information is becoming public from an internal investigation, it seems that the IRS targeted a wide range of groups, including those whose mission mentions government spending, debt, or making America a better place to live.   Read more »

The First Amendment: The Clear and Present Danger and a Freedom Worth Defending

AMENDMENT I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

I don’t believe in censorship. I also don’t believe that we have the right to drown out the voice of someone simply because we disagree with their point of view. On a daily basis, people practice their “1st Amendment Right” believing that it is a freedom of speech from the government. We fail to realize that it is also a freedom to speak without the fear of being ostracized or attacked, by fellow citizens because we have different points of view on issues or candidates, for instance.

First Amendment on Life Support

“More sparingly should this praise be allowed to a government, where a man’s religious rights are violated by penalties, or fettered by tests, or taxed by a hierarchy. Conscience is the most sacred of all property.” John Madison, “Property,” National Gazette, March 29, 1792.

“In purity and holiness I will guard my life and my art.” Hippocratic Oath, approximately 400 BC.

“Refusals based on moral disapprobation, however, are not typical of medical ethics” R. Alta Charo, "Health Care Provider Refusals to Treat, Prescribe, Refer or Inform: Professionalism and Conscience." February, 2007.   Read more »

Shame, The Shameless And The Rise Of Arrogance

Genesis 2:25 v Genesis 3:7
Taken from on line dictionary
SHAME: a negative emotion that combines feelings of dishonor, unworthiness, and embarrassment
SHAMELESS: untroubled or unaffected by shame, especially in situations where others would be ashamed
ARROGANCE: behavior that shows that you think you are better or more important than other people
GUILT: an awareness of having done wrong or committed a crime, accompanied by feelings of shame and regret

Much has been said about shame and the shameless. We should have known that the shameless elite would give rise to the ARROGANT.
