At the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico is a canyon, much like the Grand Canyon in Arizona, except that it is covered by about a mile of sea water. It is both wide and deep. It has steep cliff-like walls. And two or three miles below the canyon floor, various oil companies have discovered vast amounts of high quality oil and gas-the lifeblood of western economies, and the hope of developing ones.

After the Munich agreement, when the French and British surrendered the Sudetenland to the Germans, the French alliances in Central Europe dissipated. The French had set up a series of alliances within Central Europe including Poland, Romania, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia that sat on German western and southern border and combined equal a major power. After Munich, many of these nations made deals with the Germans, and even the Russian completed their own deal right before the Polish invasion.

A new study from the United States Department of Labor reports that the unemployment rate in 2009 for young returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan rose to 21.9%, far higher than the national unemployment rate for non-veterans in the same age group of 18 to 24. Today, Sam Brownback, R-Kansas and I announced the introduction of legislation to support efforts by Iranian opposition groups to remove the abusive and destabilizing government regime in Tehran, which is headed by Supreme Leader Ali Hoseyni Khamenei and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The bill would establish a program of direct assistance for the Iranian people and would help pave the way for a freely elected, open and democratic government in Iran. Read more »
