As Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office, Jerry Patterson is now responsible for oversight of one of the most distinctive landmarks in American history - The Alamo. On February 24th, 1836 Lt. Colonel William Barrett Travis was in command of a ragtag group of militia defending the Alamo and delaying the march of the armies of Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna. Gen. Santa Anna was on a mission to disarm the residents of Texas and strip her citizens of the rights of freedom of speech and religion previously guaranteed by the Mexican Constitution.

During the 2011 Legislature, the Texas House of Representatives passed a bill out of committee that would allow licensed concealed carry permit holders the option of carrying a firearm open or concealed. The bill did not make it to the floor for a vote of the entire House. In this session, as the debate over gun control rages on at the federal level, Representative George Lavender (R-Texarkana) and Representative Chris Paddie (R-Marshall) have introduced HB 700 to bring the debate forward again. This bill will certainly gather a lot of attention as it works its way through the 2013 Legislature.

Last week, the Texas Federation of Republican Women (TFRW) took another bold step showing that the Texas Republicans want to lead the way on reasonable and sensible immigration reform laws. The time has come for our nation to address this problem and to do so in a way that respects the rule of law and addresses immigration as a means of economic growth and prosperity for our state and nation. The resolution, overwhelmingly passed by the members of the TFRW board, calls for implementation of a guest worker program similar in nature to "The Texas Solution" platform of the Republican Party of Texas.   Read more »

Texas State Representative Jason Villalba has announced that he will file a bill to allow teachers to have concealed handguns at schools.
