Now Stupak Has Retired, Who is Going to Hold Obama to His Executive Order to Prevent Federal Abortion Funding?

Representative Bart Stupak has announced that he is retiring from his position and will not be running for reelection in the November 2010 midterm elections.

Sources familiar with Stupak's thinking describe him as burned out from the long fight over health care in which he emerged as the leading voice of pro-life Democrats wary about the possibility that the legislation would allow federal funds to be spent on abortions.

Obama Signs Health Care Bill, Same Day In History Hitler Becomes Dictator

President Obama signs the National Health Care bill into law on March 23, 2010.

This nearly 3,000 page bill contains, among other things, mandatory requirements for membership in national health care which will be enforced by the IRS. There will be monetary penalties and jail for failure to be enrolled. The IRS is empowered to hire 17,000 new agents

Law Trumps Executive Order: Stupak "Deal" Changes Nothing, American Flags at Half Mast

The Stupak “deal,” is a fig leaf at best. Executive Orders cannot and do not trump legislation passed by Congress. If the Senate bill funded abortions (BTW, that is not what the supposedly pro-life Senator Ben Nelson has claimed), no Executive Order will stand against that legislative mandate. Put aside the fact that an Executive Order can be immediately rescinded or changed at the will of the Executive. Obama has shown no willingness keep any promise he makes.   Read more »
