The 18th Congressional District of Texas: Can Sheila Jackson Lee Be Unseated?

Beginning north of Houston, Congressional District 18 (CD18) includes Bush International Airport, the Heights, downtown Houston, a swatch of the ship channel, and continues south to encompass several institutions of higher education. It is 228 miles of an ethnically and financially mixed population of over 650,000. CD18 is one of the most important districts in Texas because it is the minority majority district gerrymandered for African-American Democrats.

Some would argue that the district was designed for Barbara Jordan, the widely respected first Congressman of CD18. Jordan was the first black woman from a southern state to serve in the House of Representatives. She represented the district for 10 years beginning in 1972.

Sheila Jackson-Lee has been the congressional representative of CD18 since 1994, but is a far cry from Barbara Jordan. Lee historically votes contrary to the ethics and causes Jordan previously championed. Lee parrots the vote of House Speaker Pelosi, contributing to the out of control spending in Congress, and mortgaging our children’s and grandchildren’s futures. The incumbent, along with her fellow Congressmen, gave themselves a salary increase of $10,000 each over the next two years while stopping cost of living allowances for social security.

Few would dispute that there is dissatisfaction with the way liberals are handling the state of our country’s economy. With our national debt clock ticking at over 12 trillion dollars and the erosion of Constitutional rights, it’s time for a change.

Voters in this district are angry over the bill that could well tax Black talk radio out of existence. They also remember that Jackson-Lee backed Hillary Clinton, not Barack Obama. But, is job loss, a devastated economy, bad press and a district neglected for more than 15 years enough to unseat the notorious Congressman? If you look to the Democratic side of the ballot, the answer is likely “yes,” because for the first time in a very long time this incumbent has competition from her own party. And, if you look to the Republican side of the ballot, you find another serious female contender, Brenda Z. Page.

Why a Republican Can Win

Democrats are offering nothing new in the way of substance on their ballot. Currently, Democrats have three candidates to choose from in the CD18 primary election: (1) an incumbent career politician who we’ve discussed at some length, (2) a local career politician, and (3) an unknown career attorney. Regardless of who wins, voters will get politics as usual on the Democratic side of the ticket.

CD18 has been unshakably Democratic for 39 years. Naysayers like to tout that it’s impossible for a Republican to win CD18. We will prove them wrong in the upcoming election. The excitement being offered this year is a change in district demographics, the right political climate, and a Republican ballot with a real contender for the district’s congressional seat. Voters have the chance to make a difference for the future of this district!

Three Republicans are currently on the ballot for CD18, two are white males, but in this minority district, the odds are against a white man winning this election. African-Americans have carried this district from inception, electing a woman Congressman to the position the majority of the time. At the top of the Republican ballot now comes a woman with a strong financial background, who is a small business owner, and an attorney - not a career politician. Republicans and conservatives have someone who can go nose to nose with Sheila Jackson-Lee and win!

Why this is an Election to Watch?

Four things are working together to make CD18 an election to watch: (1) voter intolerance for politics as usual, (2) an incumbent who embodies the arrogance of liberal Democratic Washington politicians, (3) a shift in voter demographics and interest, and (4) a serious, hard-working Republican candidate running on the ballot.

Though this is not a race about race, you can’t ignore demographics in any election. It’s true that the African-American population has decreased, so are there enough voters in the district that want real change? Will this Democratic sanctuary fill the polls for the primary, only to lose interest in the general election? Hispanics have had less success getting out the vote in CD18 even though their population has increased. Can a conservative Republican woman draw Hispanic voters into the polls to vote their traditionally conservative values? Will voter turnout be enough to see the pendulum swing to the Republican side?

Tired of Sheila shenanigans, CD18 constituents may well be looking to free up the incumbent’s future. After all, we’re in a fight for our nation, for the born and the unborn, for our future. This does not come without hard work, perseverance, and difficult choices. It is up to each voter to research the issues and vote for the person who would best serve the community. Only you can make the changes you want to see in CD18.

Perhaps former Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell said it best:

“A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work.”

Brenda Z. Page is a candidate for U.S. Representative of the 18th Congressional District of Texas.

Brenda Page is the only candidate that can win CD18. Page has the ability to hit a home run - she has the moxy and the appeal.

I'm so tired of politics as usual in CD18.  We need someone who can step up to the plate, and it sounds like Ms. Page is just the person to do that!

I like that she talks plainly and in a way I can understand... and says things that make sense!  How can two barely qualified candidates and one arrogant incombent stand a chance?

Fingers crossed that we'll see a change made in CD18 this year!

After reading this article I can see why Brenda Z. Page will make a great U.S. Representative and why Sheila Jackson Lee must go! You've got my vote!

Fat Old GOP Candidates

Vote Brenda Z. Page in the Primary Election

On the campaign trail, over and over I hear the same thing; “He is a fat old balding candidate who has lost every political campaign he ever entered, why should I vote for him? He’s a flake and acts like a fat old bitter woman attacking all.” He repeatedly claims he has a base of 39,000 voters but he fails to understand the 13th amendment to the U. S. Constitution which made men free and that there are three candidates to vote for in the 2010 Primary in Houston Texas.

Good point, on the one hand the Fat old Balding Guy is a proven loser and if up against an incumbent he will lose again in the November General election and the Democrat wins. So if the GOP guy wins the Primary in March “hold your nose and go to the poles and vote for him anyway”. Because a GOP win is far better than any Democrat chained to Speaker Pelosi, Obama and tax payer money spent on federally funded abortion and socialism. But if he will lose the General election, why should I vote for him?

The answer is, make the woman Republican candidate win the Primary and she can win the General election for you.

Speaking of “Fat Old”, fat is indicative of a lack of discipline in one’s leaders. I know this is harsh, but true.

Speaking of “Old” we know there are many great qualified young people to run for a political office but they are engaged in their jobs and family. And just because a person is “old” does not make them a person of wisdom, experience, morals, inclusiveness or education.

There is a guy out there that says – “look at me I served in the military as a photographer for two years”. If you only served two years you were a reserve so as to avoid the draft or a drop out “for cause” which implies you were never a warrior!

This same guy calms to be an accountant but to be an account you need a four year degree in accounting or be a CPA – is this true? Does he even live in the district? Can he vote for himself?

Jared Woofill is out there, not fat, not old, working hundreds of volunteer hours for us Republicans. All the other Republican Chair candidates have not contributed large sums of money or time to the Harris County Republican Party. All the HCRP chair candidates are good guys but we need someone who puts their money and time where their mouth is. Some folks need back off and rethink their position including some “Fat Old Balding” loser political supporters.

Fighting the “good old boys” in Austin and those professed Republicans donating to Democrat abortion supporters and gerrymandering CD18 can be likened to Apartheid. The “good old boys” (both Democrats & Republicans) want the status quo and to divide Texas into pieces to throw a bone here to the Republicans and a bone there to the Democrats – this is my definition of gerrymandering. Voters, let’s put an end to political Apartheid/gerrymandering. I know CD 18 in Texas has not benefited from such Austin Apartheid!

Also please watch out for Church goers and politicians speaking out of both sides of their mouth or with forked tongue. “I am against abortion but oh yeah I donated to politicians who support abortions.” Texans, I like Travis, lets draw a line in the sand! You either are or you aren’t.

Often times it has been said a Republican cannot win CD18 all I can say is “BS” take a look at what Brown did.

The problem is the people of CD18 have never been given a viable Republican candidate because of the “Austin Apartheid program” and as such has perpetuated poverty and suppression of various ethnic groups. Please look to the woman Republican Candidate for CD18.

The Fat Old Balding guy is loud and bitter against the GOP, he attacks the guy who is working the hardest and the best he knows how for the GOP and he attacks the HCRP. I do not know where he is going with this but he is NOT THE PERSON WE WANT IN CONGRESS we already have a female of similar sorts doing a bad job.

As for me Brenda is the Candidate for CD 18 and Jared is my man for HCRP.

Well put Mitch! Brenda Z. Page has my vote, too! We need a strong Republican woman to go up against Jackson Lee!!

Brenda, Thank you for addressing the conservative Hispanic vote! Many Republican politicians forget that Hispanics are naturally conservative.

I applaud Brenda Page for asking the hard questions about engaging the Hispanic people of CD18 into the political process.  Most of this conversation is occurring online.  How do we reach the Latino vote if they are not reading blogs and updating social networking sites, because they simply do not have the tools to be involved?   I believe that Brenda Page is reaching out to the Hispanic community by engaging them face to face and encouraging them to vote their values - this will make a significant difference.

Thank you. Some folks forget history. European and Hispanic residents of Texas, Mexico fought side by side to gain independence from Mexico to form the “Republic of Texas” which later would become joined to the United States of America. I want a very strong Hispanic alliance in being elected to CD18 as we really do share the same conservative values and jobs are needed. As a general comment the majority of residents of CD18 are hard working peoples that have been overlooked, maligned, given inadequate educations, and continually suppressed into submission, poverty or near poverty.

I have known Brenda for over forty years.  She is a phenomenal woman that has accomplished everything she has ever put her mind to.  She is a woman of massive integrity and tough persistance.  Over the forty some odd years that I have known Brenda I have never seen her lose her temper or treat anyone in an unfair manner.  This includes times when we were young and shared living space.

I am very ready to see Brenda continue on her quest to bring order, fairness and integrity to our government, and when she gets on the ballot in the future as the President of our great nation, you know I will be 100% behind her, as all of us should be!  We would be in good hands.

I would sum up Brenda's manner as: THERE IS NO ROOM FOR FAILURE.

Go Brenda!
Your fellow business owner and proud Texan.
