Story #3: That's the Chicago Way

The Obama West Wing is currently in "campaign hack mode" and dominated by "brass-knuckeld pols," in which West Wing aides seem to relish in. 

Examples of Chicago-style politics include:

• The delight over public battles with Rush Limbaugh, Fox News, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
• A semi-public campaign of leaks aimed at the White House counsel Greg Craig who "fell out of favor."
• An early deal cut that gave favorable terms to the pharmaceutical lobby in exchange for their backing in Obama's health care plans.

And these are just the examples of Chicago-style politics that we know about! Perhaps there is a lot more going on that has been kept behind closed doors?

The lesson that many Washington insiders have drawn is that Obama wants to buy off the people he can and bowl over those he can’t. If that perception spreads beyond Washington this will scuff Obama’s brand as a new style of political leader.
