A Better Year Ahead

Republican Congressman Jeff Flake (AZ-6) has been a champion for sensible immigration reform. Below is a general political update that he recently sent out:

Dear Norm,
Well, Congress is back in session with a pivotal year ahead. The first substantive vote will likely be on the healthcare bill, which is currently the subject of closed-door meetings convened by the Democratic leadership and the White House. At this point, Republicans are unified in opposition, but that may not be enough to stop the bill from passing.
This brings me to the importance of this year. The Democrats have clearly overreached with their agenda, which will lead to a backlash in November. With most of the focus on the Democrats, Republicans are likely to pick up a few dozen seats by default.
But that shouldn’t be good enough. We have a real opportunity to retake the majority in the House. In terms of numbers, we are in roughly the same position that we were in 1994. The big difference is that voters in 1994 had no memory of Republican control of the House of Representatives. Now they do and it wasn’t pretty, particularly in the latter years.
Republicans need to convince voters that we’ve learned the lessons of the past. Most notably, things like the K-Street Project (Tom DeLay’s outreach to lobbyists), the embrace of Jack Abramoff, the Bridge to Nowhere, rampant earmarking, and overspending in general – these were all manifestations of the GOP’s willingness to use the appropriations process to win reelection.
Priority #1 this year for me is to do all I can to stand in the way of the Democrats’ big government agenda and offer conservative alternatives instead. Priority #2 is to push, prod, pursue, cajole and challenge the Republican leadership to commit to govern better than we did before. I’m convinced that if we do, we can retake the majority and reverse the unwise and unsustainable course that Congress and the Administration have chartered.
I appreciate the support you provide. It’s going to be a better year!
Jeff Flake
