I Can See Mexico From My House: Why I Support SB 1070

My name is Danielle Adriana Chavez. I grew up in south Texas on the border with Matamoros, Tamaulipas. I can actually see Mexico from my house. I am Hispanic of Mexican and Spanish origin, and I support SB 1070.

Before you assume I'm a crazy racist and start shouting insults at me from the other side of the computer screen, read my argument for supporting the law.

I am Hispanic. My dad's side of the family all immigrated here-legally-at one point or another. I am of Israeli heritage, Jewish on my mother's side of the family. My grandmother immigrated to the United States mere decades ago when she was near my age. She came to this country legally. I am a child of extremely mixed heritage. I am anything but racist. My family came over here legally. Everyone else's should too.

SB 1070 is not about targeting Hispanics or Jews or Filipinos or any one specific ethnic group. SB 1070 is about enforcing the idea that illegal immigration is just that: illegal.

For those of you that do not support SB 1070, have you actually read it?

"Requires a reasonable attempt to be made to determine the immigration status of a person during any legitimate contact made by an official or agency of the state or a county, city, town or political subdivision (political subdivision) if reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the U.S."

One can only assume that "legitimate contact" refers to being pulled over or stopped by the police for already doing something illegal. And reasonable suspicion probably refers to, oh, failure to provide valid identification...?

No one is going to get stopped on the street for "looking Hispanic" or speaking Spanish.

And if I wake up tomorrow and do get stopped on the street and asked to show my ID, I will be more than happy to oblige. As a citizen and a reaper of the benefits of this country, it is my responsibility to follow the laws enacted by state and federal legislatures. When you travel into Mexico, you are required to show your passport. Why should we not require identification when tables are turned the other way around?

I also feel the need to rebuttal against some of the ridiculous comments I've heard since the bill has passed.

"Hitler required people that looked Jewish to show their documents. We're going to become Nazi Germany!!!"

My family was IN the Holocaust. In fact, I am missing chunks of my family tree because of that horrific event. The difference between my ancestors and illegal aliens is that my great great grandparents were legal residents of the countries they occupied. No one is insisting on a search on anyone with a Hispanic last name or brown skin.

"Don't speak Spanish! You'll get arrested!"

What do you think an illegal immigrant is? I was particularly offended by this comment because an entire side of my family speaks Spanish on a regular basis. My father's first language was Spanish. Spanish is a well-known language in this country. Comments such as this one are more racist than the actual bill-not that the bill is racist.

And nowhere in the bill can the words "Hispanic," "Latino," "Chicano," "Spanish," or "Mexican" be found. So tell me, why does everyone assume only Hispanics will be targeted?

As a resident of a border town in deep south Texas, I have seen immigration first-hand--both legal and illegal. I witnessed close friends being notified that their paperwork finally went through and they were now citizens of our great nation. Watching someone gain citizenship into this country is a beautiful thing to experience. I have heard stories from Mexican immigrants who have said they would never even consider dual-citizenship because their heart and their allegiance belongs to the United States and the United States only.

I have also seen my friends' cleaning ladies disappeared week after week after not being able to re-enter the country, and I have seen hoards of students denied funding for college because, despite their lack of financial security, they were never properly documented and therefore, ineligible for financial aid.

I have also grownup hearing and reading stories about mothers coming over from Mexico just to have all their children on American soil-making these "anchor babies" eligible for all the benefits that are paid for by citizens' tax dollars. Mothers feed off of their children's benefits and live in fear of being deported.

Enforcing immigration laws isn't about racial profiling or kicking out people whose paperwork didn't go through the system. Enforcing immigration laws is about keeping people safe.

In addition to stories about cleaning ladies, lack of college funding, and anchor babies, I cannot even estimate the number of news stories I have seen and read that show just why being a legal citizen of this country is so necessary.

Years ago, I was watching our local evening news. A family appeared on the screen with their faces blurred out. One of the women was holding a little girl in her arms and appeared distressed. The translation given by the reporter said that the family had lost their other little girl. Because they were undocumented immigrants, they could not go to the police for help.

Because this family had not sent in their paperwork and legally immigrated into the county, they were missing a child-a baby girl-and could not ask the authorities for help for fear of being deported.

SB 1070 should send a positive message out to the citizens of our nation, as well as the rest of the world. Immigrating to this country legally is important. Immigrate legally and you can reap all the benefits of this great country.

Other nations in the world require passports for entry. In fact, people argued FOR the health care bill because "all the other countries are doing it." All the other countries, I'm sure, support legal immigration and frown upon entering their borders without the proper documentation-so why not support this law if "all the other countries are doing it" as well?

I do support further immigration reform. It should be easier to immigrate into this country legally, but using difficulty as an excuse to trespassing America's borders doesn't cut it.

Enforcing the idea that all citizens and residents of this country be documented ensures that everyone's wants and needs are accounted for. Being a legal immigrant and a citizen of this country guarantees you a vote and a voice in our nation. Isn't this something that everyone in America should strive for? Isn't this what makes us the great democracy the rest of the world sees us as?

I am a loud and proud Latina, but if mis padres came here legally, so can yours.

I'm shocked Bob.  Bovis doesn't believe you either!  Bovis doesn't believe me because me and my "La Raza soul brothers" as he put it, think with our overly sensitive heritage based ideology and not our brains.  He feels we "little brown people" should just buck up and realize that our rights are not threatened at all.   I was really hoping that he could see reason if it came in white wrapper but I guess his nativisim is so strong that he'd rather have Nazism than Americanism.

"It angers me when I hear white people defend racial profiling, but when a person of the targeted race does so, it greatly disappoints me.  "

It angers me when people lie. You are lying about this. It's not about 'racial profiling' and it is race-baiting and divisive and dishonest to do this ... it's about stopping illegal immigration and keeping communities safer by making sure law enforcement has ability to use this tool.

"AZ's law SB 1070 directly targets Latinos." False. It targets illegal aliens. The burden on any legal resident/ citizen is less than the burden of taking your shoes off in airport security.

In truth, you make it clear that you WANT illegal aliens to IGNORE the laws, think it's fine that they do, support their violation of immigration law, and won't even admit that they are illegal aliens by using 'undocumented' and other euphemisms.

"AZ's law SB 1070 directly targets Latinos." False. It targets illegal aliens... Patrick you're ignorant. Answer this question, who're the illegal aliens? or from where do most of the illegal aliens come? You've your answer... I will encourage you to get yourself more educated.

I live in Arizona and I think either you're blind or do not want to see the reality. Joe is hunting Hispanics all over the place, Buckeye, Phoenix, Chandler, Laveen. Maybe you live in your own bubble and that is why you don't see it. Second, what source did you used to support your statement "The majority of Hispanics who live here legally support this bill". I'm Hispanic, a lot of my family, friends, co-workers Hispanic and not Hispanic live here legally and we do not support this bill. All the people that I know do not support this bill. Only ignorant people support this law. Do you forgot that this country needed people, it was begin for people to come to this country, this is why this country became what it is today. In addition AZ resident, this country is always trying to be the example for the entire world and trying to teach other countries and make them believe in democracy, spread democracy. This bill is a joke for this country and the entire world. We are trying to make Iraq believe in democracy, fairness and equity when this bill is totally against that. I feel sorry for you AZ resident and I hope if you go to a foreign country (legally or not) you don't have to call the police because that is the most ignorant statement. The police is not for the country, is for the people.

Is easier to give up someone else's right then their own. I hope Janet would get stop and get questioned about her papers. I'm a citizen and I'm sure I will be irritated if I get stop just to show my papers. We, the American's are so proud about the legal system and believe so blindly in the legal system because here "we are innocent until we are proven guilty" when in other countries is "you're guilty until you can proof you're innocent". Now, with this law, "we all are guilty until we can proof we are innocents".

Your right Dana. They take jobs us Americans need and want.  Roofing in over 100 degrees weather, cleaning our houses, picking and making our food. Lets make 'em give them back!

OK My dad is an illegal alien who works from 7 am to 12 pm in construction, when not he works on staff preparing stages and sounds for conferences. his boss was born in Michigan from an all-white family, he  owns 104 houses which my dad has to do maintenance  and restoration and fix any problem that the resident of that house might encounter or might had cause. OK "your bottom line"...HE GETS PAID 10 DOLLARS AN HOUR, AND HE'S BEEN WORKING WITH HIS BOSS FOR 3 YEARS AND HAD NOT HAVE A SINGLE DAY OF VACATIONS. OR HEALTH INSURANCE AND HE HAS TO BE WILLING TO WAKE UP AT ANY SECOND OF THE NIGHT IF SOMEONE REPORTS A DAMAGE IN A HOUSE. AND STILL HE GETS PAID 10 DOLLARS AN HOUR...NOW DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH HIS BOSS PAYS HIS OTHER EMPLOYEES??? THE ONES WITH THE PAPERS, THE ONES WHO WERE BORN HERE???..DAMN FUCK ME SIDEWAYS IF THIS AIN'T LABOR ABUSE, HE PAYS THEM 20 DOLLARS AN HOUR AND THEY DO HALF OF WHAT MY DAD  DOES AND THEY GET HEALTH INSURANCE AND THEY GET VACATION TIME AND THEY DONT HAVE TO WORK A CHRISTMAS NIGHT OUTSIDE ON A FUCKING ROOF JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE DECIDED TO PUT A CHRISTMAS ORNAMENT AND MADE A BIG HOLE IN IT AND IT WAS STARTING TO SNOW..OH AND YEAH HE GOT PAID 10 DOLLARS. SO BITCH THERE'S YOUR FUCKING BOTTOM LINE.......

Those "Rights" you are referring to are the rights of illegal aliens. Instead of being treated like full fledged American citizens, they will be treated like human being who have violated the law. This is not a political move-it is a move to decrease the ridiculous amount of illegal immigration. Also, this was a HIGHLY bipartisan bill. So I guess Democrats are not "able to stand back and look at the bigger picture".
Go to a border city. Live there for 18 years. Meet someone who has crossed the border with a Coyote. Meet someone who has immigrated here legally, not by birth. Then, please, talk educatedly.

This is an urgent plea to all Americans that would like to save our beautiful country. As everybody knows our country is in dire need of a resurrection. There are at least 12.5 million citizens unemployed and crime rates are steadily increasing while illegal aliens are poring over our borders.
Not all, but the vast majority of the people are criminals that have no regard for our laws or people. They are simply here to steal jobs or sell drugs and will kill anyone who gets in their way. They work for next to nothing then get a free ride back to their country to live the high life with their families while millions of Americans are starving, homeless, and sick. There are at least 13 million of these people that are devouring our country from the inside like a strengthening murderous disease. Polluting the minds of children with drugs and leaching off of our already withered economy then sitting on their lazy boys with their legs kicked up, a devilish smile, and a cigar resting between their fingers.
So knowing all of these cruel and inhuman practices and or choices who are these people protesting to say that Arizona’s bill SB 1070 is against their human rights? Those people are traders to their new land and are aiding in unlawful activities. Those people that are carrying signs like “it’s not over” are standing directly in front of America’s face basically giving us the middle finger. Those people are like steroids helping to speed us into continuing down the path of allowing our own destruction, trying to scare us with such kind of signs and their numbers marching down the streets. But do you know what I see? I see a bunch of uneducated people that probably haven’t even read the bill and don’t even care what it says. All they know is that they don’t want it passed because it will stop them from taking our money.
So in conclusion what we need to do is get in the streets right alongside of them face to face and let them know that this bill must and will get passed for the sake of each individual American, each and everyone in their family, and for all proud Americans alike. SUPPORT SB 1070!!!!!!

who in their right mind would want to live in arizona other than red-neck hillbillies.racist putos.
