Want To Make Harry Reid Happy? Drop Your Membership in the NRA!

Please read below the comments of an NRA member who disagrees with the endorsement policy of the NRA and says he is dropping his membership. Then read the NRA Grassroots Division response which explains the single-issue policy. I, too, do not like the Political Victory Fund single-issue endorsement policy. I am a Life member of NRA and I intend to remain so. Senator Reid’s record of support for the Second Amendment listed below is a result of the fear that NRA strikes in the hearts of politicians who want to be re-elected. I do not contribute to the NRA Political Victory Fund because of their one-issue policy. I DONATE DIRECTLY TO CONSERVATIVE PRO-GUN CANDIDATES ONLY AND URGE YOU TO DO LIKEWISE.

But we should not abandon the NRA - abandoning the NRA would be shooting ourselves in the foot. The powerful multi-million members of NRA are feared by politicians in both parties. We need all the help we can get in preserving our right to keep and bear arms!

Rather than contribute to the NRA’s victory fund I am donating to SHARRON ANGLE, the conservative pro-gun challenger that is opposing Harry Reid for the Nevada U.S. Senate Seat.

Here are the comments from the NRA member who is dropping his membership because he disagrees with the NRA’s endorsement policy:

A recent article has been floating around that the NRA was endorsing Senator Harry Reid for re-election. Not sure on the validity of the article or if was a hoax. I sent the NRA a copy of the article and asked that. The following is the response I received from the NRA. From what I understand in the veiled NRA response, they are in fact endorsing Senator Harry Reid. I will be canceling my NRA membership.

Note: Nothing would make Harry Reid happier than to see NRA weakened by member withdrawals. DON’T DO IT!

Here is the response from Michael Land of the NRA Grassroots Division:

Thank you for contacting NRA-ILA regarding the recent rumor that NRA-PVF has indicated they will endorse Harry Reid.

Regarding any potential endorsement of Sen. Reid in the upcoming elections, NRA-PVF has not yet announced any ratings or endorsements in this race. Ratings and endorsements will be determined closer to the election. It is important to note, however, that the NRA is a single issue organization and that when our ratings and endorsements are announced, they are based solely on a candidate’s support for, or opposition to, our Second Amendment rights.

Other issues, as important as they may be to many people, do not and cannot play any role in those decisions. NRA represents a broad coalition of American gun owners, who are bound together by their support for the right to keep and bear arms.

In 2004, Senator Reid was rated "B" in his reelection by the NRA Political Victory Fund. Since then, as U.S. Senate Majority Leader, Senator Reid has proven himself to be a supporter of our Second Amendment rights. It would be accurate to say that few, if any, of NRA's legislative victories in Congress during the last six years would have occurred without his active support.

As an example, he was instrumental in Senate passage (and eventual enactment into law) of the "Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act" (PLCAA)", which shut down reckless lawsuits against gun manufacturers and dealers that attempted to hold them liable for the misuse of firearms by criminals. Sen. Reid also cosponsored S. 659 (PLCCA) in the 108th Congress and voted against "poison pill" amendments to it, including the Feinstein Amendment to renew the federal ban on so-called "assault weapons", and the Kennedy Amendment that would have banned most hunting ammunition.

Following Hurricane Katrina, he voted for legislation, that is now federal law, to prohibit gun confiscation during states of emergency. He also voted for legislation to allow commercial airline pilots to be armed in the cockpit to protect their passengers and crew. In this congressional session, Sen. Reid voted for the Ensign Amendment to repeal Washington D.C.'s gun ban and restore self-defense rights in our nation’s capital. He cosponsored similar legislation--S. 1414--in the 108th Congress. He also voted for an amendment to allow law-abiding citizens to carry firearms for self-defense in national parks and wildlife refuges. This federal policy change just took effect on February 22.

Early last year, Sen. Reid emphatically stated that he would oppose any effort to reinstate an "assault weapons" ban if the Senate were to vote on it in the future. In addition, he voted last year for the Thune-Vitter Amendment to provide national reciprocity for state Right-to-Carry permits. He also voted twice for the Wicker Amendment allowing Amtrak passengers to include firearms in their checked luggage. These votes were possible only because of Senator Reid’s actions in his capacity as Senate Majority Leader. Finally, he was among the 58 Senators who signed the pro-gun congressional amicus brief in the McDonald v. Chicago case, argued before the U.S. Supreme Court on March 2nd, which will decide whether the Second Amendment applies to all states and localities.

Most recently, the NRA worked with Sen. Reid to include in his manager's amendment to the health care reform bill a provision that prohibits the disclosure or collection of information relating to the lawful ownership, use or storage of firearms or ammunition and also prohibits lawful gun ownership, possession and use from being used as a factor to determine eligibility or premium rates for health insurance. This provision was adopted on December 22, 2009 and was included in this legislation when it was signed into law on March 23.

Finally, Senator Reid is opposed to any anti-gun treaties that might come before the U.S. Senate for ratification.

These are a few examples of Senator Reid’s support and leadership on Second Amendment issues. Given the Senate could vote on gun-related issues in the coming months, rest assured any votes will be considered in future candidate evaluations. Regarding NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre and NRA-ILA Executive Director Chris Cox recently attending the grand opening of the Clark County Shooting Park (CCSP) with U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and other Nevada elected officials.

The CCSP is the largest shooting park in the world. This 2,900-acre state-of-the-art facility is devoted entirely to the shooting sports and is the nation’s premier shooting park. As the nation’s largest shooting sports organization, the NRA’s presence at the ribbon-cutting ceremony should come as no surprise. NRA actively worked with several Members of the Nevada congressional delegation, including Senator Reid, to ensure that this range was built. The development and construction of the CCSP has the full bipartisan support of the Nevada congressional delegation, and Nevada’s Republican Governor.

Senator Reid was instrumental in arranging not only the transfer of the then-federal lands to Clark County where the Park is located, but also in securing $61 million in funding to develop and build the Park. The Clark County Shooting Park would not have been built without his active efforts and support.

Then why doesn't the NRA just provide the Senator with the RATING he's earned and LEAVE OFF THE ENDORSEMENT.  They can give him a good rating based on his votes and other actions without actually ENDORSING him!

I won't cancel my membership in the NRA but I quit donating additional funds to them a few years ago because of other issues such as this one.

I think the "one issue" argument is STUPID.  It's the same tactic/strategy employed by the Native American tribes and look where it got them!  They were all "one tribe or nation" and wouldn't band together to fight a common enemy.  THEY LOST BIGTIME!!!

Gun Rights should be at the center of both (all) political parties.  The NRA's policy insures that they have supporters in both parties.
Unions, the NAACP and other groups have wasted their power by supporting a single party.  Now the Democrats won't pass bills for them because they already have their support.  The Republicans won't pass bills for them because no mater what they do, these groups don't vote Republican.

It's a good policy and it has worked for some time.

If Harry Reid looses and the Democrats retain the Senate, the Chuck Schumer will majority leader.

As a member of the firearms industry I would like to add some comment here. At the SHOT Show this year in Las Vegas, I spoke with several key people in the NRA-ILA group on this specific issue.

At first I was stunned at their position of supporting Harry Reid. They went on to explain that the NRA is a SINGLE ISSUE organization. They are aboutpassing laws that strengthen and support gun owners and the 2nd Amendment. To that end, Sen. Reid as minority leader and majority leader has been instrumental in passing ALL of the gun legislation that has passed in the last 10 years or so. Also, you have to look at who replaces Reid as majority or minority leader (depending on how the Nov. election determines which party is in the majority). The replacement for Harry Reid is Chuck Schumer! The senior senator from NY is the POSTER CHILD OF GUN CONTROL!

Now, as a voter, we must consider much more than just a single issue. We must look at the Senator as a whole. Because of Reid's aggressive mobilization of the Obama agenda, I would find it very hard, if not impossible, to ever imagine supporting him over the Republican candidate.

From a national standpoint, replacing Reid with Schumer probably has little effect on Democrat legislative priorities. However, in relation to gun issues, it would be a major shift in leadership of the party.
Replacing Reid is also a major key in the puzzle of Republican takeover of the senate. Republicans need to capture every seat they can get and to that end, Reid must go! But as a strong 2nd Amendment supporter I must say, our battles will be more frequent and tougher when Shumer takes over as head of the Democrats in the Senate.
What do you think?

Last week I was out at the Eustis Florida Gun Range and the Range Master announced that the NRA was supporting Harry Reid for re- election and I must say I could not believe it. America was not built on a SOCIALIST agenda of which Harry Reid FULLY SUPPORTS!. He is the most liberal un-American possible.. If the NRA is actually supporting Reid they need to take a poll of their members because they would get little support for this extreme socialist. Yes, if you follow the money trail you can usually figure out what is going on in politics.  As I understand it, Reid gave the NRA a 61 million dollar gun range in Nevada. The NRA needs to look at the  long term benefits for supporting conservative politicans who will in the end  build a strong America! Stand up and do something!!!!!

but they donated $4800 to his campaign. Money that came from our membership dues! No, there are other groups that protect my 2nd amendment rights far better than the NRA.
