Senator Cornyn Says Farewell to Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison

Today I spoke on the Senate floor about the retirement of U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) after representing Texas in the U.S Senate together for nearly 10 years:

This is an historic moment for many reasons. We are paying tribute to an extraordinary woman who has made history by being the first female United States Senator, and someone who spent the last two decades fighting for commonsense values here in our nations capital.

I cant think of any Senator serving in this chamber who works harder than Kay Bailey Hutchison. She is tireless and she is relentless in her pursuit of what she believes is in the best interest of the constituents in our state.

She has been a tireless advocate for Texas military families. Its no exaggeration to say that every military base in Texas has felt the impact of her work. I know how deeply Kay is proud of her work that shes done to help the troops stationed in Texas, from Fort Bliss to the Red River Army Depot.

Kay’s fought time and time again to promote tax relief for hardworking Texas families. Kay, of course, has always championed the state sales tax deduction, which may not seem like a big deal to others, but it is a big deal back home in Texas.

And of course Kay has also worked to reduce the marriage penalty tax. Shes been a strong defender of taxpayer interests and her efforts have made the tax code less hostile to saving and to families.

Shes one of the Senates leading supporters of NASA and human space flight, and NASA has contributed historic technological breakthroughs that have benefited all Americans. She appreciates the role that NASA has played in fostering innovation.

Senator Hutchison has made history serving as the first woman to serve the great state of Texas in the United States Senate. Kay has always been a pioneer of sorts. As the father of two daughters, that means a lot to me.

Im used to being surrounded at home by strong, intelligent women. Serving with Kay, Ive also been a partner with a strong, intelligent Texas woman, and Kay has been a role model for so many young women, not just in Texas but throughout the United States.

So Kay, I join with my colleagues in saying to you, Vaya con Dios.
