The Start of December's Constituent Work Period

This week kicked off my District Work Period in Texas. The House goes back in session in the nation’s capital on January 7, 2014. Here's a quick look at how I spent the first week of this Constituent Work Period and some of the people I met with across the district... (For more on this week, make sure to check out the photo album in the right sidebar).

In Bastrop, I met with city officials, local business groups and the Bastrop County Rotary Club to discuss what's happening in Washington and to listen to the issues of concern to them and their families.

I also ventured to St. David's Emergency Center in Bastrop to tour the facilities. Pictured at the bottom is Kim Barker, RN, BSN, CEN, ED Manager at St. David's, greeting us when we arrived. Judge Pape is pictured left and Charles Girard with Hospital Corporations of America is pictured on the right.

This week also gave me the opportunity to meet with members of the Bastrop region senior community. Joining me for our discussion was Bastrop County Commissioner Willie Piña, where we mostly focused on preserving Social Security and Medicare and the disastrous effects of Obamacare. I assured those seniors in attendance that their SSI benefits will remain intact. Our promises to those who are retired and living on fixed incomes must be kept.

I went to Shiner High School on Tuesday afternoon to recognize the Shiner H.S. marching band for placing first in the state of Texas UIL competition. I gave a congratulatory speech in the gymnasium to honor the members of the marching band on this impressive feat, and I plan to make the same remarks on the House floor when Congress reconvenes in January.

I’m pictured here with the leader of this talented group of young people, Stephen Krupicka, and his proud family. Stephen serves as the Shiner H.S. Marching Band Director.

In Victoria, Warm Springs Rehabilitation Hospital CEO Shawn Todd provided me with a tour of the new facility, which is scheduled to open January 6. This 26-bed facility will be a tremendous benefit to the local community, and I enjoyed getting an in-depth look at the new Victoria rehab hospital and the services it’ll provide.

I headed to El Campo to meet with members of the local business community to talk about the budget deal passed by Congress, the Farm Bill and the 1-69 corridor. While in town, I also formally recognized the winner of the Congressional Hispanic Essay Contest at her high school.

Frida Bazan currently attends El Campo High School, and I've selected her as the 27th District competition winner for her essay submission entitled, "Honoring My Hispanic Heritage." Frida's essay captured the essence of her heritage and eloquently depicted what it means to her. In Frida's own words: "As a proud Hispanic I will never forget where my family's roots initiated....my Hispanic heritage will always remain in my memories and deep in my heart." Congratulations to Frida and thanks to all of the students who participated for sharing with us what your heritage means to you.

In Wharton, I met with a group of local folks over coffee to talk about the budget, Obamacare and the need to restore sanity in Washington.

I also had the opportunity to address the Wharton Rotary Club at their luncheon Wednesday afternoon to provide the latest update on what I've been working on in our nation's capital.
