Tonight's Vote on the Debt Limit

The following statement came in from Congressman Ted Poe (TX-2).

This evening the House voted on a bill to increase the legal debt limit by $2.4 trillion without cutting a single dollar from our budget. I voted against raising the debt limit today. We simply cannot continue to spend money that we don’t have.

There are about 309 million people in America. According to the National Debt Clock, the national debt amounts to over $42,000 per citizen and over $129,000 per taxpayer.

Washington’s borrowing and spending culture is out of control and is dangerous to our country. The debt ceiling should not be raised without major, unprecedented spending cuts. We cannot give Washington another blank check. Doing so would only accelerate the tremendous debt crisis that threatens our economy.

Southeast Texans, like most Americans across the country, are concerned about the economy, job growth, and the mounting federal debt. In February, many of you responded to a survey I conducted on increasing the debt ceiling. Out of over 7,000 responses, 66% said that under no circumstances should Congress vote to raise the debt limit. Click on the chart below to view the results.

While it seems that our concerns continue to be ignored by the Washington elites, I assure you that I hear you loud and clear. That is why I will use my congressional voting card to vote against adding more debt on the American people. The solution is obvious: when you find yourself in a financial hole, stop digging.

And that's just the way it is.

God and Texas,

Ted Poe
Member of Congress
TEXAS
