Alleged Wage Theft and Disregard for Safety Earn Carole Johnson Builders, LLC a Dubious Award

In recent months, TexasGOPVote and I have written several articles on the topics of wage theft and employee misclassification. One company in particular, Carole Johnson Builders, LLC, came to our attention and their misdeeds have earned them a new dubious honor - That of "Most Despicable Employer". The "award" comes from a recent dinner of the Houston Interfaith Worker Justice Center that was reported in an article by ConstructionCitizen.com. The award was presented after being selected from a field of three companies who had abused employees.

Earlier this year, I interviewed Bobby Herndon, a former job foreman for Carole Johnson Builders. After his own payroll checks from Ms. Johnson were shown to be bad checks, he had the misfortune of having to tell his workers they too had been ripped off.  Below is one of his bad checks.

ConstructionCitizen reports the company received the award after not only cheating its workers out of over three weeks of wages, but also for creating an unsafe work environment where drinking water was not available and safety equipment was not in use.

Companies like Carole Johnson Builders, LLC bring disgrace to the construction industry and reflect negatively on our conservative values of ethical business practices. Conservatives need to stand up against unscrupulous companies who seek to gain an unfair competitive advantage by stealing from workers and misclassifying employees as contractors.

Investigative sessions will be held by the Texas Legislature this summer, and I will bring you coverage of these sessions.
