Additional Aid for Harvey Survivors

Helping Houstonians rebuild after Hurricane Harvey remains my top priority.
I am working every day to ensure that every family and business affected by this terrible storm has the financial help they need to rebuild and recover.

Recently, I joined Governor Greg Abbott, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), Southside Place Mayor Pat Patterson, and West University Mayor Susan Samples in welcoming United States Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Ben Carson to West Houston.

Together, we visited Southside Place Police & Fire Department to recognize and thank the police, firefighters and first responders from Southside Place, West University Place, Bellaire, Harris County, and the City of Houston for their courage and service during Hurricane Harvey.

We also discussed the $5 billion recently allocated to Texas for Hurricane Harvey and disaster recovery. This grant funding is being provided through HUD’s Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) Program for the rebuilding of housing, businesses, and infrastructure following Hurricane Harvey and previous flood events.

This allocation comes as a result of the disaster supplemental Congress recently passed, and it is in addition to the $5 billion in CDBG funding HUD previously awarded to Texas late last year. Local Texas officials can now implement a disaster recovery plan to fund their communities’ needs.

These critical funds will help Texas families and business owners impacted by Hurricane Harvey continue on their road to recovery. We still have a lot of work to do, but the additional $5 billion in CDBG funds HUD has awarded to Texas is certainly another significant step forward in the recovery process for our community.

I told Secretary Carson that I look forward to showing him some of the hardest-hit areas of West Houston – places where my neighbors are still living on the second floor of their homes with the sheet rock torn out on the first floor.

As a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation and Housing and Urban Development (THUD), I look forward to working with HUD and my colleagues in Congress to ensure these funds are quickly disbursed to those who need it most so that we can rebuild a stronger, more prepared Houston.
