Letter to Congressional Leadership: Let's Make a Deal!

Dear Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader McConnell, Minority Leader McCarthy, and Minority Leader Schumer,

I urge you to work together and pass a sensible immigration bill that secures the border and provides the Dreamers with a method to earn their legal status before February 15th. If you fail to do so, the president has already said he will shut down the federal government again or use executive power to secure the border. Please capitalize on this opportunity to bolster our nation’s security, workforce, and economy.

Tuesday night in his State of the Union Address, President Trump called for unity in making a deal on immigration. “We must reject the politics of revenge, resistance and retribution and embrace the boundless potential of cooperation, compromise, and the common good… Let's work together, compromise, and reach a deal that will truly make America safe,” he said.

I agree with the president. Please put politics aside for the sake of the common good of America.

President Trump also acknowledged the tremendous contributions that immigrants make to our nation and said that he wants more of them to come in. “Legal immigrants enrich our nation and strengthen our society in countless ways. I want people to come into our country, in the largest numbers ever, but they have to come in legally,” he said.

While legal immigrants will benefit our economy at 4% unemployment, there are already millions of undocumented workers here who could provide greater value than they are currently providing if they had a method to earn their legal status so we could ID and tax them properly.

The president also spoke of a desire among himself and lawmakers to pass a bipartisan bill to rebuild “America’s crumbling infrastructure,” which was followed by applause from both parties. With the lowest unemployment rate in 50 years, who do you think is going to build the new infrastructure? Unless you all pass some sensible immigration policy to abate the current workforce shortages in the construction industry, that infrastructure reform is going to take a long time and cost a lot of tax dollars.

The state of our union and its economy is strong! Now the main thing holding us back from continued exceptional economic growth is workforce shortages!

Our nation and its economy would benefit greatly from immigration reform that secures our border, allows DACA recipients to continue working in the United States, and provides the undocumented workers who are here and can pass background checks with a method to earn their legal status so the government can ID and tax them.

Please work together to pass a sensible immigration bill before February 15th. A secure border and a method for Dreamers to earn their legal status would be a great first step in fixing our broken immigration system.

May God grant you the resolve to do the right thing, and may He continue to bless America.
