Meet Gabriel Rauen

One very important part of my job as a member of Congress is to get to know and listen to those who live in the 27th District of Texas. It is also one of the most rewarding. Texas has no shortage of hardworking, down-to-earth people who work hard to make America great – people like Gabriel Rauen. I have known Gabriel’s parents, Michael and Nonie, for many years and every time I hear of this teen’s latest accomplishments, I am impressed by his work ethic and his desire to ensure that he does his part for our country.

When Gabriel was just a toddler, his mom purchased inexpensive yet educational place mats to keep Gabriel entertained while she served him meals. What she had hoped was that Gabriel would pick up a few historical facts as she protected her dining room table. What she didn’t know was that Gabriel would memorize every U.S. president at the age of five, take a keen interest in the political parties, past and present, and eventually run for office himself.

Gabriel’s first political campaign was in the fourth grade when he ran for, and won, vice president on the student council. During a trip to Washington D.C. last week, Gabriel told members of my staff that he only had one once chance during his speech to impress the voters so he focused on a three-point plan and added in a little bit of humor. He’s been with student council ever since and later started a bipartisan political group for teens after discovering the local Young Republicans group was only for those ages 18 and older.

Gabriel doesn’t just get involved in politics though, he’s also on the basketball team, competes academically at several competitions, and is hoping to graduate high school in three years as Valedictorian.

Gabriel’s story shows us that there are a lot of ways we can all be involved in our communities and that if we want to make a difference in this world, the best way to begin is right here in our own backyards.
