Ted Cruz Weekly Update

This past week, I was proud to join Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) in introducing a bipartisan resolution declaring this week “National School Choice Week.” In recognition of “National School Choice Week,” I penned an op-ed for National Review, highlighting the renewed sense of urgency to ensure current students and the next generation are equipped and empowered with opportunity. Texans gathered to celebrate this movement at over 3,900 school choice events across the Lone Star State. The current one size fits all approach to education ignores the fact that every child is unique. School choice is about giving all students the opportunity to learn, grow, and be challenged in an environment best suited to their needs. School choice is about empowering families, by providing a variety of options for educating their children.

While we are seeing victories all across the country on school choice, more work remains to be done to ensure every child has access to a quality education. As a part of Congress’ tax reform legislation, which was signed into law in December, I introduced the Student Opportunity Amendment, which allows families who utilize the already-popular 529 College Savings Accounts to also save tax-free for K-12 tuition expenses for all public, private, and religious institutions. Hardworking families in Texas, and across the country are already benefitting from this provision and applying it to their children’s educational expenses.

Also this week, the Washington Examiner highlighted my call for and commitment to repealing and replacing Obamacare in 2018. We must deliver on our promise to provide more choices for consumers, put people in control of their healthcare, and most importantly, lower the skyrocketing health insurance premiums.

On Wednesday, I delivered remarks at the Hudson Institute regarding U.S. policy toward North Korea. While North Korea poses real threats, the process of denuclearization and reunification of the Peninsula remains incremental and deliberate. With resolve and decisive leadership, I believe the United States can turn the tide in North Korea.

Additionally, I was glad to introduce a bipartisan resolution with Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), to designate April 18, 2018 as “Military Retiree Appreciation Day.” The service of our retired Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen, coupled with their ongoing contributions to our communities, is extraordinary.

My Senate office continues to work to ensure swift and effective service to Texans and Texas communities in need of federal assistance following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. If you need additional information or assistance during the recovery and rebuilding process, please do not hesitate to contact my office or utilize the federal and state resources listed here.
