Hurd Announces Funds to Help Texas Communities with Energy Costs

I recently announced that more than $94 million has been awarded to Texas through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

In South and West Texas, we are no stranger to the summer heat. Unfortunately, with rising temperatures comes higher energy bills each month, and, given many Americans are experiencing financial hardship due to the current pandemic, it makes the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program all the more critical. This program provides support for families across my entire district, from San Antonio to El Paso, and these resources will help seniors and low-income households keep their lights on, water running and living situation at a comfortable level. I have long advocated for more funding for the State of Texas in the LIHEAP, and I am proud to see our state continues to receive a substantial allocation to reflect the needs of our friends and neighbors.

Additional funding for LIHEAP was included in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act which I strongly supported. Overall, Texas’ $94 million award is nearly 11% of the total additional funding for the program.

I have long been an advocate of LIHEAP, and in FY2019 helped secure an additional $34 million for Texas as a member of the Appropriation Committee.
