Congressman Pete Sessions' Ebola Update from Dallas

On Wednesday, we learned that the first patient to be diagnosed with Ebola in the United States passed away. My deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of Mr. Duncan and all of the medical professionals who diligently cared for him while he was fighting this awful disease.

As we move forward, I believe that the Administration needs to take effective measures to ensure that the American people are protected from Ebola. I am pleased that the Administration announced enhanced screening measures at five major airports, however I believe that we can and we should protect the American people by using every tool at our disposal to defuse the imminent threat that this disease poses to our great nation.

Today, the House Committee on Homeland Security is holding a field hearing in Dallas to look into the local, state, federal, and international coordination and response efforts that took place following diagnosis. It is my hope that these Congressional hearings will help us gather the facts of the case in order to understand how we can better combat outbreaks such as this one in the future. As we continue to monitor this situation I have confidence that the hospital, local authorities, and the CDC will be open and transparent with the people of North Texas and keep us informed on any new developments.
