Cornyn Hosts Veterans’ Roundtable, Calls on Obama to Direct FBI to Investigate

I met with local veterans’ groups, including members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, in Houston today. I heard about the challenges these veterans face and the unacceptable delays some have experienced while waiting for care.

I discussed the actions I am taking to hold the VA accountable, including a new letter I sent to President Obama today requesting he direct the FBI to lead the investigation.

The VA’s Acting Inspector General (IG) and his team are to be commended for aggressively launching their investigation, but the breadth and complexity of these problems very likely exceeds the capabilities of any IG office.

We must get to the bottom of these allegations as quickly as possible, and anyone guilty of criminal wrongdoing must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Based on the scope and magnitude of these problems, we can conclude they are not isolated cases of administrative error by low-level clerks. Instead, they appear to be part of a pattern of systemic, pervasive fraud involving multiple layers of personnel within these facilities.
