Elysium the Movie

How many of you enjoy going to the movies? I go to be entertained to watch something that is basically not connected to my reality so I can escape for a short period and then forget the movie when I walk out the door. Elysium is not that easy to forget. It had a tremendous $30.5 million opening weekend August 9-11.

Elysium is a 2154 futuristic movie set in, of all places, Los Angeles. It stars Matt Damon and Jodie Foster and is directed by Neill Blomkamp. Elysium is a solar island apart from Earth where all the "privileged" live. Their government also controls Planet Earth where all the "poor" live. While the basics are there, bad against good, it also connects to our reality now. Los Angeles is devastated, heavily overpopulated and run by robots. It is also in ruin similar to the aftermath of an earthquake or war giving the impression of a third world country.

The plot could use some help by staying focused, and Max the main character, also is in need of direction. But then again, this is just a movie. The parts that seemed not so futuristic were that the general population all spoke Spanish, work was scarce, and the people did not have the same healthcare benefits as the people living in Elysium did. And YES, Americans were divided, very divided. This seemed very familiar. The movie provided a lot of food for thought for what lies in the future!
