Hurd Supports STEM Education Initiative for Veterans

I showed my continued support for expanding Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and our nation’s veterans by helping pass a bipartisan bill that promotes veteran participation in related curriculum and career fields.

The Supporting Veterans in STEM Careers Act (S.153) aims to boost participation by former servicemen and women in STEM curriculum by making programs offered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) available to veterans. Additionally, the bill directs the NSF to coordinate with other federal agencies that serve veterans to encourage them to study and pursue careers in STEM and computer science.

We live in a world where our military and economic dominance is no longer guaranteed. To maintain our position as the leading global innovator, we must have enough creative problem-solvers and leaders to fill jobs – not only in today’s industries but also in the industries that don’t even exist yet. This bipartisan bill ensures our nation’s continued prosperity while keeping the promises we made to our nation’s veterans to help them transition into civilian life by learning valuable skills that can earn them high-paying, rewarding careers. I look forward to continuing to fight for our veterans as a member of the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Subcommittee.
