Leftists Praise Dictators (Castro Edition), Fear Trump
With the death of Fidel Castro, we mark a century of leftist defenses of brutal dictators.
Following the Bolshevik Revolution and the rise to power of the bloodthirsty V.I. Lenin, Western leftists couldn’t say enough about the wonderful new society being born in Russia. “I have been over into the future, and it works!” proclaimed journalist Lincoln Steffens, professional idiot.
There were many, many — MANY — similar statements; I scratched the surface in The Politically Incorrect Guide to American History, my biggest bestseller. The terror famine in Ukraine, which killed millions, was covered up by Walter Duranty of the New York Times, and other leftists said it was just anti-Stalin propaganda.
So when honest journalists like Malcolm Muggeridge tried to tell the world what was really happening, his claims seemed dubious, or at least debatable.
Mao Tse-tung, perhaps the century’s greatest mass murderer, was of course a wonderful “agrarian reformer.”
Fidel Castro was a patriot who loved his country.
And so on.
These are the people who fear Donald Trump most hysterically.
It’s obviously not the arbitrary exercise of power that bothers these people. Their hero Fidel actually did confine homosexuals in camps, yet they fear Donald Trump, who supports gay marriage, will do the same thing.
Whatever the full explanation, the fact is that an awful lot of leftists, as the late ex-Marxist Eugene Genovese pointed out, excused and defended — again and again! — some of the worst people ever to walk the earth.
If the right wing had done the same, something tells me we’d never hear the end of it. (And if you’re going to say some right-wingers had a soft spot for Mussolini — who by the way was a forgettable peanut next to these other figures — so did plenty of Progressives.)
As it stands, most millennials barely know anything about the crimes of communism, or the Western leftists who whitewashed them.
We can’t ever forget any of this. We must know the nature of what we are up against.
You sure won’t learn about it from the media, or from professors who adored Castro.
But you’ll darn sure learn about it from me, and from my team of truth-tellers, at Liberty Classroom.
