McCaul on Protecting Preexisting Conditions

I, the Lead Republican on the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Chairman Emeritus on the House Homeland Security Committee, released a statement on H.Res. 271 and my support for preexisting conditions:

On the first day of this Congress, I voted for an amendment that would have called on Congress to work together, in a bipartisan fashion, to protect Americans with pre-existing conditions, only to see that effort blocked by Democrats.

Earlier this week, I signed on to the Pre-Existing Conditions Protection Act (H.R. 692), which aims to protect three important goals for patients: guaranteed access to coverage, a prohibition on pre-existing condition benefit exclusions, and a ban on premium rating based on health status. These are the types of meaningful legislative solutions I will support – not partisan, non-binding resolutions.

Yesterday, members of the House were forced to take a vote on a political messaging resolution that has no legal authority to improve healthcare for Americans, protect individuals with pre-existing conditions, or help lower healthcare costs. Meanwhile, the Democrat House Majority is trying to advance its healthcare agenda of socialized medicine, or ‘Medicare-for-all’, which would end employer-sponsored healthcare and force 158 million Americans into a one-size-fits-all, government-run healthcare plan.

I remain steadfast in my principles for our healthcare system: lower premiums and out-of-pocket costs, while maintaining protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
