McCaul’s PEACE Through Music Diplomacy Act Clears Senate

Congressman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) released a video and statement following the Senate’s passage of his PEACE Through Music Diplomacy Act. The bill — included in this year’s National Defense Authorization Act — will now head to the president’s desk for his signature.

"In both good times and bad, music has encouraged, inspired, and united people of all backgrounds and cultures; that’s why they call it the universal language,” said Congressman McCaul. “The PEACE Through Music Diplomacy Act will leverage that unique power of music to advance U.S. foreign policy goals. Senators Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) and Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) introduced companion legislation in the Senate.

Background:

The PEACE Through Music Diplomacy Act directs the Department of State (DOS) to leverage partnerships with the private sector when designing and implementing the music-related exchange programs run by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA). It also specifically authorizes music-related exchange programs that advance peace abroad, and it encourages the DOS to integrate a focus on conflict resolution into all relevant exchange programs for young musicians.
